Don't get too excited Thin Man, but Notts sound to be playing quite well.....although they have a driving wind behind them!

Watching on Ifollow. I don't want to be negative, but we had an extremely strong wind behind us, the sort where goal kicks go straight up, then go back towards the goal. It's going to be the Alamo, second half. I hope we can defend the lead, but, as we all know, defending is not our strongest quality.....

This. We’ve played really well in the first half, but even if we were 4-0 up I’d still be concerned playing into this wind. Carlisle have nearly scored two own goals from balls curled toward the 6-yard box and Collin has struggled from all of the corners from the left-hand side.

Carlisle elected to play into the wind in the first half. Let’s just hope it drops for the second half, otherwise the ball won’t leave our half.

Hemmings has played well, as have Rose, Doyle and O’Brien (who’s playing further forward). The big test comes now.

We need to just see this game out and more importantly keep a clean sheet for a confidence boost.

Why do we always shoot ourselves in the foot somehow? We just can’t help it.

Ryan Schofield will learn a very big lesson from this apparent howler and will be a stronger keeper for it.

It is now upto the rest of the team now to make sure they stay composed and carry on the way we were and insure that it does not cost us. We simply can’t afford to leave Carlisle without 3 points.

If he’s doesn’t he won’t go far in league football. I also agree about crosses. He needs to learn and work on developing the confidence to come for crosses and command his box. Being right behind the goal at Cheltenham this was clear to see.

Not many players can claim to have been harshly judged this season, but I still think Ross Fitzsimons copped the blame for playing behind a diabolical defence and midfield which would have exposed any goalkeeper. Schofield is bigger, but I've not noticed that he's any more dominant.

I'm going to keep repeating it because I believe it, but the switch of formation is key. This isn't some fluke. You can't keep playing a two-man midfield with a 37-year old and a 31-year old often getting outnumbered. After the Lincoln and Mansfield games, opponents sussed out where our inspiration was coming from and smothered it by packing the midfield, so you have to match it up. David Vaughan's another fossil, but his best games for Forest came playing within a three/five man midfield where nobody got outnumbered or overworked. It's also the case with Boldewijn, Mackail-Smith and Alessandra (and Hemmings when he plays left side) that they are all players with a goal threat who prefer to cut in than get chalk on their boots.

Fully deserved win, unrecognisable from recent weeks. Kudos to two players who have been whipping boys this season - Hemmings and Vaughan. Hemmings, in particular, was excellent playing as the lone striker.

Plus we have closed the gap from 7 points to 4 points (albeit 5 points due to goal difference).

It will all be in vain though if we don’t carry this on and take this into Morecambe on Saturday. The only one thing that troubles me is tonight the pressure was off as most of us were resigned to relegation after Saturday.

It will be on again come Saturday and that game against Morecambe remains a must win.

Yep, unbelievable decision. Shocking challenge.

Stubbs and Duffy were brilliant at the back, as were Rose and Milsom (Rob produced a shocking challenge of his own in the first half). Would have been a travesty if we’d lost, and I’m delighted for Schofield that his cock-up didn’t cost us (although it gave me a few more grey hairs).

Now let’s go on a winning streak and get out of this mess.

Schofield made what I thought was a really good save not long after his meltdown. He is still finding his feet but he's great shot stopper.

I have been critical of Hemmings and didn't see tonight's performance coming - as good a lone striker performance I've seen from a Notts player in a long time.

Vaughan was indeed another positive, I said on another thread he might play well with two minders next to him and he did.

Lots of positives tonight, only one negative was that it seemed a large, lush green pitch which helped us play football in the second half - not sure we'll get that every week but that's to worry about later!

jacobncfc
12-03-2019, 10:27 PM
Watched on ifollow and thought we were really good. Adapted to the conditions much better and thoroughly deserved to win.

Hemmings was outstanding and a clear man of the match, but props to Duffy as well who has his critics but to me is a solid and dependable lower league centre back who should never have been dropped. He was excellent, and Stubbs looked a lot more composed with him alongside doing the organising.

It's hard to know what we actually need points wise to stay up because Yeovil are so weird. Realistically I think it's now two from Notts, Macclesfield and them. Since taking 14 points from their first 7 games and going top, they've been genuinely appalling. To the extent that if both Notts and Yeovil replicated their form from the previous nine games over the nine games left, we'd overtake them. And it doesn't exactly feel like we've been in sparkling form ourselves.

I did forecast this win, but will this same team turn up on Saturday?

If Ardley plays the same team (as far as possible) in the same formation, there's every chance.

Have we finally found a team selection and a formation that works

Message to Neil Ardley.......This time, don't change a winning team unless necessary, like you did for the Newport home game.It ****ed everything up.Don't bring Stead back FGS !!

Aside from the tactical arguments about 4-3-3 suiting the players we have, confidence is a huge thing and those players will be coming off the pitch tonight believing in the shape and style they played. Stick with it, and only experiment if we get well into the game with Morecambe and it isn't working.

GET THE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN!

It's been a horrible day. Me and my Dad planned to go to this game, but he had some bad news and his cancer has come back so we decided to stay at home.

It's made everything a little bit better. Brilliant performance, watched it on ifollow.

Why did nobody tell Schofield about Hope lurking for their goal? Oh well, doesn't matter now, and I'm drunk!

COYP!!!! WE CAN DO THIS!!

Big respect to all the fans who went up there x

Good luck to your dad Manc, hope he sorts it out..

Echo those sentiments. Best of luck to your dad. My own dad has had three different types of cancer over the years and is now fighting fit at 87, so I hope your dad pulls through and you all stay strong.

Just seen the goals, and what a howler from Schofield. However, their player was lurking in the background like a pantomime villain, and surely one of our defenders should have shouted "he's behind you". Superb finish from Allessandra for the third (cough). I think even Nathan Thomas could score a one on none!

Still buzzing that we won, but Ardley implied in his post match interview that Jim O'Brien could be out for a while after that awful challenge at the end. That worries me, as we simply don't have anyone we could bring in to midfield to do his job to anything like his standard :blue:

Not a big fan of Duffy or Vaughn but they were brilliant tonight. Hemmings was top class

Absolutely. Those three were our best players, believe it or not. Duffy put in a solid, grown-up performance, Vaughan used the ball well and was full of running (!), and Hemmings played an absolute blinder - fair play to all three of them.

Wouldn't be Notts if they didn't toy with us like this would it?

I know... I think this is the third time I've resigned myself to relegation only to be given a slither of hope. I know it sounds negative, but I find it easier to carry on in the relegation-is-a-certainty mindset. I mean I actually enjoyed the game last night because I thought it didn't matter either way.

Bloody hell. COYP.

If Allesandra's goal had been in the play-off semi final last season he would have been flagged offside.

Couldn't believe that none of the Notts players warned Schofield about the lurker behind him. That goal has already gone around the world on Twitter.

Worst thing about the Allessandra goal was that I was never entirely confident he was going to score - kept urging him to take it even closer to the goal before shooting. Either that or stopping it on the line and heading it in, like you did as kids.

BTW, one for the record books: Nathan Thomas did record a shot on target last night, and also several that are still on their way to the moon.

Mysterious football found on Filey sands this morning. I'll bet that was one of them.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This. It was obvious that their player was circling around in the hope that he might get his prey, and it wasn't like it was a sudden action as with Crosby all those years ago. Where's the communication? Or maybe the outfield players thought that if the ball was kicked up and then straight back that player would be offside. Stupid all round on NCFCs part.

And surely after the Crosby incident goalkeepers are taught to look around first?

Isn't he effectively out for the rest of the season anyway with an injury needing surgery? I thought Ardley had said as much at one of the recent pre-match interviews.

Actually think Aless did quite well there. Think the initial 'shot' was actually an attempt to just blast the ball forward so he had room to run, rather than carry the ball and get caught.

I'm sure you're right, and mostly they do. You see them routinely looking back first over one shoulder and then the other. I've just seen the replay of last night's incident and to me it's ungentlemanly conduct. Hope is really hanging around for ages, hiding from the keeper's eyeline. I wouldn't be happy about one of our players being sneaky like that. Dion Dublin's goal courtesy of a Shay Given roll-out was OK to my mind because it was a spur of the moment thing. Dublin's momentum had taken him off the pitch, and Given put the ball down just as he was trotting back past him. Knocking it into the goal was just a reflex.

Having said all that, I remember Tony Hateley once obstructing a keeper's clearance by standing right in front of him. Then he just dobbed the ball out of the keeper's grasp with his hand and hoofed it into the net... and the ref gave it. Things were different in those days.

I'd be delighted, because firstly we need all the goals we can get and secondly because is shows a level of ingenuity and application which has been lacking all season!

Yes the performance was on par with the FGR away, if not better being as the weather was so bad, now let's hope we can continue that against Morecambe.
