1999/2000 was the first season that Notts had squad numbers and names on their shirts. The first time 5 substitutes were named, any 3 of which could be used. The Football League decided to revert back to Goal Difference if teams had the same number of points. And for the first time there were to be full match commentaries on Radio Nottingham of all Notts games.

July 17th saw a friendly against Arsenal, which was agreed as part of the Jermaine Pennant transfer.
Prior to the match Arsenal Ladies played Ilkeston Ladies in a 25 minute each way game. Notts’ pre-season was then completed by jetting off to Thailand to play 3 games against the Thai National team, a Brunei Representative XI and a Thai Universities Select XI respectively.

The Sultan of Brunei was allegedly a long time Notts fan and reputedly the World’s richest man. What a pity he didn’t buy the Magpies, as Derek Pavis, who was approaching 70, was looking to sell the club at the time. In fact, in August SNAG (Support Notts Action Group) was formed specifically to prevent Reg Brearley, who had been Chairman of Sheffield United in the 80s, from buying the club.

The first game on 7th August 1999 was at home to Luton Town. It finished 0-0 in front of a crowd of 6,141. The Notts Team that day: Ward, Holmes, Blackmore, Liburd, Redmile, Warren, Ramage, Richardson, Stallard, Beadle, Murray. Subs used: Bolland, Darby, Robson.

Two 3-0 wins followed which saw us on top of the table after 3 games. A run of 5 wins in October meant that when we won 1-0 at Stoke at the beginning of November we regained top spot. The Stoke side that day had 3 ex-Notts players; Chris Short, Richard Dryden and Phil Robinson.

By this time though, Sam Allardyce had left the Magpies, having resigned as manager on 11th October to join Bolton Wanderers. Gary Brazil was given the job until the end of the season. Our form tailed off somewhat after the Stoke game and for the rest of the season we hovered around 7th or 8th in the table, the latter being our final position.

Three games come to mind. The first a 4-4 draw at home to Bristol City towards the end of November. The second a fortnight later, a 5-1 thrashing of Bournemouth. Brett Angell had signed on loan a couple of days before and scored a hat-trick. Notts were 3-0 up inside 8 minutes.

The third game worth a mention was the Magpies first of the new millennium, a home game on Bank Holiday Monday against Burnley. Brett Angell scored both goals in a 2-0 win for Notts.

20 years on and Bournemouth and Burnley are in the Premier, while Notts are about to start life in the Motorama National League.

Football, it’s a funny old game!

I’m glad that the Sultan of Brunei didn’t acquire Notts. It wouldn’t have been good to have been owned by a very oppressive ruler who has been threatening homo***uals and adulterers with death by stoning.

I think most of that's just pent-up frustration from when Albert Scardino provided proof of funds but he couldn't

I remember that season well. The Bristol City game was nuts. If I remember correctly, Mark Warren scored an unlikely screamer to make it 4-4.

A strange team as well: some genuinely good players (Stall, Ricco, Ward) and some genuinely average ones (Holmes, Bolland, Liburd).

It was all looking good until Fat Sam buggered off to Bolton. I'm fairly sure we would have gone up had he stuck around, or at least made the playoffs. But it was also the beginning of the end of the Pavis era, and the start of what would turn out to be almost decades of mismanagement and decline (barring Munto, which was really like a brief resuscitation).

An unused ticket for that 1999 Notts v Arsenal friendly is currently a buy-it-now lot on eBay.
