View Full Version : O/T:- Cheltenham Festival Day One

Right, I feel I need to explain this topic a bit. It's purpose is nothing more than to offer those who have an interest a chance to put their selections up, and the O/T prefix means it's easy for those with no interest to ignore. It's not an incitement to gamble, that's entirely up to the individual. If you do like a bet however, this is the time to take advantage of the odds being in your favour for once. The bookies always make generous offers this week in the hope of attracting new customers and there are loads of them! The two standout ones for me are Ladbrokes offering anyone opening a new account a £5 free bet on the last six races tomorrow if you bet £10 on the first. That means you get to bet £40 for an outlay of £10. The other is Paddy Power offering your money back as a free bet (up to £10) on all losing bets if your horse finishes 2nd, 3rd or 4th in all races at Cheltenham on day one. This offers tremendous value and I will be filling my boots. The other bit of advice I would give is not to follow my selections. Because I've never had a losing Cheltenham with my tips on here I must be due one, and I can't say I'm confident about tomorrow but here are my selections anyway:

1:30 Asterion Forlonge
2:10 Notebook
2:50 Cobra De Mai (e/w)
3:30 Pentland Hills (e/w)
4:10 Benie Des Dieux
4:50 Earlofthecotswolds (e/w)
5:30 Lord Du Mesnil

I will be having loads of other bets due to Paddy Power's generosity (and I wouldn't have backed Benie Des Dieux at odds on without it) but this is a 'one per race' summary.

Any comments such as "Hahaha your tips are sh!t" (tarquin) and "Betting is a mug's game" (Soccerman) are most welcome, but please remember to put them in the correct place..

Out of curiosity Swale, what bit did you edit? I can't see a difference unless you've added another full stop at the end (my mistake).

If you've found a better offer from the bookies I'm interested.

Ahhhhh.....so we are not allowed to disrupt your thread, physically on your thread....we have to disrupt it somewhere else?...got it.

That's about it. If your only contribution to the thread is to disrupt rather than stick to the topic, then disrupt in THR as much as you like. That's what it's there for.

That doesn't just concern this thread or you or me by the way, it should be adopted by everyone for the sake of those who claim that petty arguments are ruining the board. If we all make an effort to confine them to THR, we'll soon see if they are right.

Edit: any tips for tomorrow, because I'm not that confident in mine.

Just changed the 'O/T:-' prefix to match the others. I always do it to all of the off topic thread prefixes so they're all the same. Call it Moderator OCD :)

Just for fun I´ve backed 4 of yours, sold one for a straight $2 win on everything else, and picked a couple of my own with a drinking theme....small stakes as I´m never happy backing greyhounds.

1:30 Asterion Forlonge.............Captain Guinness $1 at 18.5

2:10 Notebook.............Brewin Upastorm $1 at 7.8

2:50 Cobra De Mai (e/w).........Agreed $1 at 21

3:30 Pentland Hills (e/w).........Agreed $1 at 10

4:10 Benie Des Dieux........Sold $2 for $1.24

4:50 Earlofthecotswolds (e/w).......Agreed $1 at 24

5:30 Lord Du Mesnil.......Agreed $1 at 7.2

I love the designated THR thread, best addition since Callum Roberts.

As for Cheltenham Day 1, I love a gamble and have a whole host of ante post bets at enhanced odds for today, all hoping to land a big win.

Do you get the offers over there such as best price guarantee, extra places etc. I know you are limited on choice of bookies, but when I was in Mexico I remember using Bet365. William Hill are offering each way on the first seven places in the opener, so I've had a bit on Captain Guinness and Elixir D'ainay with them.

Yes, I can get all the BET365 offers, but I´m trading the Pakistani cricket league on Smarkets (seem to do ok most days, not the best liquidity but not too bad) so I´m using that to back the horses each way as I´m already on it.

Might look at the 365 offers tomorrow but horses ain´t really my thing and I only did it to be sociable.......judging by the early Chelters results....... "must try harder"

Must try harder is right Tarqs? I have had only one placed in the first 3 races. Exciting finishes though.

Results so far today show why I'm always banging on about searching out the offers. If I had put £10 (or £5 e/w) on the ones I've named I would be £40 down. Instead, due to the special offers I'm only £5 down.

Asterion Forlonge 4th - normally a loser, but returned £10 as a 'free bet for finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th' offer.
Notebook 6th - £10 lost.
Cobra De Mai 6th - normally a loser, but returned £25 due to a 'pay 6 places on each way bets' offer.
Pentland Hills 8th - £10 lost.

My cricket trading bets have all come in, but I´ve only made money on the horses by selling your short-priced picks in race 1 and 5.......every horse I´ve backed (for a win or place) has cost me money....the moral is probably to SELL rather than back horses (ie be the bookie on the exchanges)....after all, why are they giving so many free bets away?

Here are the cricket bets....I prefer to trade rather than "gamble".....made $6 in the first 20 overs of Peshawar plus the first 10 overs reply by Lahore, split the winnings $3 on each result then grab a beer and relax.

I rarely back odds on shots and only had £10 on Benie Des Dieux because of the 'free bet for finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th' offer. I fancied the favourite to win but also had £10 on Honeysuckle as this looked a two horse race. Barring a fall, I couldn't see either of them finishing out of the first four so it was a no-brainer. I don't normally bet big, but if the offer didn't have a £10 limit I would have backed it to the max, because it looked a "heads you win, tails you don't lose" situation. That's how it turned out, I got a win on the winner and a free bet on the second.

Why on earth do people insist on cluttering up the board with these non-Notts threads? . It’ll put people off.

175 pts up for the day , delighted.

Totally forgot I had 10pts at 10s on the Conditional. Same bet with Imperial Aura at 6s and Honeysuckle at 11/4

Very unlucky to lose on the bob with Abacadabras but he and Asterion Forlange still placed and showed profits. Cilaos Emery the same at 8s

Blanks on other two races but 20pts e/w on Sharjar at 33/1 who placed, was the most pleasing of all only losing to clear obvious favourite.

Nice amount to bet and lose on days 2 and 3

I haven't had time to go through all my accounts because I had loads of bets and a football match to attend, but at a guess I'm around the break even point but with a few free bets. What I do with them will decide whether I make a profit or not. For tomorrow's selections I'll copy and paste the summary I give my coach passengers:

1.30 The Ballymore Novices' Hurdle (2m 5f)
The unbeaten Envoi Allen looks to have strong claims. He took the Champion Bumper here last year and has impressed in his three hurdle wins. Sporting John has potential, but lacks experience here. The consistent Longhouse Poet has each way prospects, while Decor Irlandais should appreciate the testing conditions and could go well at a huge price.
Selection: Envoi Allen Each way: Longhouse Poet

2.10 The RSA Novice Chase (3m ½f)
Even though Allaho didn’t beat much when winning a modest race at Fairyhouse in January, he won in the style of a rapidly improving horse. Copperhead is a sound stayer and should be there at the finish, while Easy Game boasts some good form and could get involved if he sees out the trip.
Selection: Allaho Each way: Easy Game

2.50 The Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle (2m 5f)
This is always one of the most difficult races to find the winner, but Dame De Compagnie looked an ideal type when winning a handicap here before Christmas, and looks attractively weighted. Alfa Mix is fairly lightly raced and looks like he could have some improvement in him. Champagne Well rarely runs a bad race and should be running on up the hill.
Selection: Dame De Compagnie Each way: Champagne Well

3.30 The Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase (2m)
This has been described as the race of the festival, but at the time of writing the participation of Altior is in doubt. If he does takes his chance he would be the selection. Chacun Pour Soi lacks experience having only raced five times over fences, so Defi Du Seuil would be the alternative. It's not really a race for e/w betting, but Politilogue looks generously priced if the big guns fail.
Selection: Altior, if absent Defi Du Seuil

4.10 The Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase (3m 7f)
It’s hard to look beyond Tiger Roll, who has won this race for the last two years before going on to Grand National glory and he ticks all the boxes. Urgent De Gregaine knows his way around here and has never been out of the first three in five runs over this course. Josies Orders is another veteran with proven course form and looks overpriced at 33/1.
Selection: Tiger Roll Each way: Urgent De Gregaine

4.50 The Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (2m ½f)
Palladium has taken to hurdling well, and his win in the mud at Sandown last month looks a decent bit of form. Saint D’oroux showed big improvement with a very easy win at Gowran last time, and may be ahead of the handicapper.
Selection: Palladium Each way: Saint D’oroux

5.30 The Weatherbys Champion Bumper (2m)
Another typically strong Irish challenge with Appreciate It leading the market after winning a Grade 2 at Leopardstown. His odds look a bit short however, and the pair from the Pipe stable look interesting. Panic Attack made an impressive debut and gets all the allowances as a four year old filly, and Israel Champ has shown a good attitude to win two listed races.
Selection: Panic Attack Each way: Israel Champ

The weather looks good tomorrow, so if anyone fancies a good day out at the last minute I have a few seats available on the coach. All tickets are gone but you can pay on the day at the course.

After the win tonight I'm in such a good mood I'll even offer a 100% discount to Notts fans.

You could always treat your wife to a day's shopping in Cheltenham if you don't fancy the races.

I am confused Elite, you have posted "I haven't had time to go through all my accounts because I had loads of bets and a football match to attend, but at a guess I'm around the break even point but with a few free bets. What I do with them will decide whether I make a profit or not. For tomorrow's selections I'll copy and paste the summary I give my coach passengers:"

It´s simple and we do this every year (sorry)........You have posted 7 bets....none of them won .....surely you are $35 down (if it is $5 bet).....maybe it´s not that bad if you went each-way to recover your stake but you haven´t posted your accounts....7 bets, 7 losers = "oh dear I´m losing" ........it ain´t ****ing rocket science.

Now I know you, and I know what you do........"bet A gave me a freebie on bet B which means I´m not really losing, in fact I´m glad I lost etc etc etc"

So, please tell us what to do.....do we deliberately try to back winners....or losers?

I´ve tried to back a mixture of your bets and mine.....NONE WON......so I sold three of your bets (once I realised that you were on a losing streak) and backed cricket (which is a money-maker) and Notts (which is a roller-coaster)......and miraculously I´m winning......why?, because I ignored you and did what I know usually works.

Not an argument, but if you are going to post a list of losers, I think you ought to own up to it......7 losers x 5 squid = minus 35 squid....not "wow I won on a different bet with a different bookie with a free bet that I stole from my neighbour when he fell asleep"

ps did you back Notts to win or lose tonight?

In a bit of a rush, but see posts #12 and #14.

No bet on Notts last night.

Totally agree with Elite . Free bets and extra place offers are always worth hunting out and taking advantage of. They are usually well advertised, as Elites picks from Day One show it can reduce a heavy loss to only a minor loss on the day.

I was lucky enough not to need any, thanks to a hatrick of winners at 10s, 6s and 3s and one particular good place at 33s.

Not fancying much on Day 2 , except in the Coral Cup, where I am going for a big win with 3 EW bets.

Bachasson.

Again good luck everyone who's having a flutter.

One bet on Notts last night, and I was successful 3-1 correct score, which is a rarity for me when it comes to Notts scoreline predictions but I'll take it.

OK, if you cannot beat èm, join ém (spanish keyboard, no apostrophes that I can see).......I´ve hunted out free bets on BET365 but they only have one on Chelters that I can see......unlike Elite´s which is based on losing bets (perfect for the lottery that is Chelters, IMO), 365 offer a free bet only if you WIN on an ITV race at over 4 to 1....not a lot of use to me as I know nothing about horses BUT I´ve had a $1 each way on The Big Breakaway at 11s in the 1st race just to try to get on the "freebie bandwagon"

Funnily enough, I also spotted a free in-play bet of $5 on Liverpool footie tonight, which I will sell on the exchanges once the match kicks off and will cover my horse-racing bet (so it will be a complete free freebie, if that makes sense)....jobs a good ún....welcome to the world of free stuff Tarquin, this thread has been inspirational......I have to go, as I´m in the queue outside Asda to go through their skips (dumpsters to you Americans) searching for extra-crusty bread from the bakery section and overly-ripe nanas and tommyatoes

Found the apostrophe ''''''''''''', apparently I had been using the "accent" symbol ie ´´´´´´´´´´.......I learn something new every day

This is turning into a nightmare trying to pick horses (two fourth places in a row....grrrrr)......I've not lost money this fast since that black girl in soho said she'd be back in 10 minutes with my room key!

ok.....both Elitus, plus the Racing Post, are picking Champagne Well in the next so I´m on it with "enhanced each way".....this might be my last attempt then it´s back to the relative safety of cricket betting.

That's it for me, now I know why I don't bother with horses.......three 4th-placed horses with only Diesel D'allier paying a few squid profit on enhanced places (which didn´t cover all the other losses).....and I had a 2nd on a short-priced EW bet that made me enough to buy a bag of tutti-fruttis...yum yum

To make the day worse, my 8am Pakistani cricket match was cancelled due to rain, and all matched bets over the last 2 days returned....Elite, you can have your thread back, no more interference from me....enjoy yourself....I'm off to fashion a Coronavirus face-mask out of a pair of Miriam's panties combined with a pair of her pantyhose (I've spunked this month's pension chasing free bets and cannot afford a real one)

Another absolutely brilliant day out today, win or lose Cheltenham never fails to deliver. Along with Notts, jump racing, drinking and gambling are my main passions, so I'm in heaven there.

Like yesterday I must be pretty much even, Dame De Compagnie at 8/1 should have covered any losses.

Notts and drinking.....agreed......take the racing off "jump racing" and make it "jumping" (preferably on my kitchen table)...yum yum.

Life is a gamble, but unfortunately our chips are running out everyone.

ps the coronavirus mask is coming on well, but Miriam wants to know why the laundry basket is empty....oops!

Another slightly generous personal assessment based on your quoted two picks per race on Day 2 and yesterday's race results

Glad everyone had a great day who went, did anyone come away with a nice tidy profit from Day 2?

Not when you take into account that a fair bit of the stake money was free bets I had mentioned from day one. I only won on one of them (Saint D'oroux e/w at 20/1), but didn't lose anything on the losers. With Altior and Chacun Pour Soi out I also backed Politologe at 13/8 with a bookie offering a 'without the favourite' market. Should have been more confident and gone for the win.

A few had good days, a couple of people backed Ferny Hollow at twelves in the last to turn a losing day into a very profitable one. One of my daughters had the last three winners, and to make her day even better she was joint winner of the tipster competition.

I couldn't find as many free bets for Day 2 as Day 1. A place on a 20/1 EW bet is
always nice , so 4s?

Betting two horses on each race and only a 20/1 EW place and a 13/8 win, even with some free bets, tough to break even. Similar to your Day 1 performance.

I always think of I've enjoyed it and only lost a little , it's been a good enjoyable days gambling.

Better luck on Day 3 to one and all. I'm hoping to land a big fish either today or tomorrow whilst playing with profit

For clarity, and to disprove any allegations that I'm bullsh!tting, I've done a breakdown on all the selections I posted in all races for yesterday. For simplicity's sake take the stakes as £10 win and £5 each way. As I suggested no e/w bet in the big one, that would be 13 bets so £130 staked, of which three bets were free bets accrued on day one, so an actual outlay of £100 in real cash. The returns were £90 for an 8/1 winner, £26.25 for a 13/8 winner, and £25 for a fifth odds place at 20/1. That means £100 staked returned £141.25.

I am sorry, I wrongly assumed you were betting more than £10 a horse. My mistake.

With the free bet offers maximum stakes being £10 per race, then yes £10 to win and £5 e/w would be the optimum scenario to take advantage of the offer and limit loses :)
