Match day's here again as the fixtures come thick and fast. Hopefully today's the day we begin to see some tweaks that work from Ian Burchnall's side as we face play-off rivals Wrexham.

Hopefully it will be Notts who enjoy a Hollywood-style happy ending after a convincing 90+ minutes and not another Scandi-noir tragedy like the last two matches.

Remember this is now a 12:15pm kick-off for the cameras at the behest of BT Sport. No club-supplied stream is provided today.

For those unable to watch you can let your imagination create the pictures with the help of BBC Radio Nottingham at this link (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/football/56459271)

What formation?

Slightly concerned to see Barnett & Chicksen will probably be our full backs and not a right foot amongst them. Barnett can’t defend either.

MancMagpie
02-04-2021, 10:26 AM
Barnett and Chicksen ? Eeeek! The new lad Griffiths straight in, could be a miracle move or could prove to be too much for a 20 year old on front of the TV cameras in his first game. Nice to see Roberts and Knight on the bench. Although none have had game time for months so not expecting anything really.

I wish we had some youth players putting pressure on the under performers. Too many players getting rewarded with starts for being poor. No idea what O'Brien brings to the team. I'd be quite gutted if I were Rodrigues or Sam. Biggggg game for Chicksen who may have a new lease of life post Ardley.

How do we know we dont have good youth players as we never see em !

Something I mentioned the other day so we sign 100 right backs and it looks like a left footer is going to play RB unless it is a 3-5-2.

Still lets hope we have enough to win today.

Unfortunately, that’s an issue for IB. Due to COVID, youth players train separately to the first team. So, he can’t form an opinion.

Yes, we do have too many right backs. Brindley injured, Golden(?) recovering from injury and Dion was very poor on Tuesday. Although, he wasn’t on his own. There are reasons why we have no RB playing today.

I’m hopeful there can be a change in fortunes today.

If one or two were exceptional we would see them in the first teams.

Those fullbacks fill me with zero confidence, and the opposition should target them. Happy Knowles is starting, not surprised Rodders is benched as he's been disappointing like many recently.

If Griffiths hadn't started even mild mannered me would have rioted.

Can't see anything other than defeat today but will be watching and hoping like many others that I'm wrong.

I'm nervous ha ha.

I find the line up really interesting. Chicksen in particular came from very good stock and with a lot of ratings and Ardley signed him and basically binned him straight away. I think he was a football radar signing that he didn't want but went along with. IB has put him on the bench previously and today he pulls DKE and starts him! However I am most interested in our bench which looks very interesting indeed.

Let's not kid ourselves, the team's being picked are pretty random now....

We might forget, Ellis has only been here a few weeks - him, Barnett, Chicksen, Griffiths hardly know each other and the formations have been chopping and changing constantly as well as the playing combinations.

Assume Wrexham are settled, so they start at a distinct advantage

laddo

Laddo, you’ve let me down. You normally offer a little positivity.

Need to see the formation in action in first 5/10 mins, only positive for me is Knowles being giving a chance to impress from the start and the hope of legs in midfield with think unknown quantity loan signing.

I'm saving my usual positivity for medium to long term (see recent comments regarding IB and the owners).

Like others I’m worried about the 2 left backs but maybe one of them can play right and we just haven’t seen that yet. Neither fill me with great confidence Barnett has shown slightly more than Chicksen who’s showing nothing to date. Rest of the team - not unhappy and hope it works with the new lad and great to see Roberts on the bench and hope we get a glimpse of Knight (10 min cameo cos we’re 3-0 up would be good ).

Half time and after the madness of the first 10 mins it all calmed down. Make no mistake though it has still been poor. We have created very little and the main problems are poor distribution and the midfielders not doing enough to find space and create.

Griffiths has absolutely no presence at all and is not what we needed. I'd like to see this 'list' of potential signings presented to Birchnall, because I can't see the logic of this one. Why is recruitment so bad this year?

Wrexham have no strikers and look very average. We should be winning this in the second half if we have any chance of making the playoffs.

First half analysis...

Wrexham had the better of first 20 mins.

We looked out of sorts with Chicken at left CB and nobody seemed to know their jobs in a 3-5-2.

However, we grew in to the game a bit and started to look less nervous. Despite that we've created very little and if it wasnt for Slocombe, we could be 2 down.

Griffiths doing ok, as is Knowles. Barnett put a couple of good balls in.

Wooton working hard but nothing to show for it

MAD_MAGPIE
02-04-2021, 12:11 PM
After the first ten minute onslaught things calmed down and Notts got more into the game. We've had the lions share of possession 64% compared to Wrexhams 36%.

A couple of chances off target, but no shots on target yet. We do seem to be moving the ball forward and playing the ball more in the Wrexham half than what we saw on Tuesday and it's like we have woken up a bit and look more sharper.

I'm sure many fans would have taken 0-0 at half time. So second half let's hope we can move it up another notch and have more chances and some shots on target, and you never know we could beat these.

02-04-2021, 12:16 PM
The first 20 minutes was a team coming into the game with confidence against a team that wasn't, but we've weathered that (somehow) and seemed to start getting a foothold without necessarily creating much. It's a foundation on which to build, but we definitely need more movement from the front players. The midfielders are getting flack for playing the ball too slowly and looking unsure, and no doubt they are suffering the same lack of confidence as the rest, but if they're going to move the ball more quickly they need runners to feed. This game is very winnable if the players show initiative and courage.

You could see the players gradually growing in confidence as the game wore on, and I agree with the posters above that it's good to see a more physical approach. Whether we're playing direct or passing the ball around, you want the opposition to know they've been in a game and to go back home with the bruises to show for it. Our best two managers in recent times were Warnock and Allardyce and their teams certainly didn't take any prisoners. Ironically, Wootton got sent off for a non-foul.

Good win in what was a six-pointer. Partly makes up for the awful showing against Aldershot.

Some agricultural challenges put in by Notts players throughout. Marvellous.

Huge relief for the new manager, and delighted for him.

Awful opening 10-15mins, they should have been one up after 2.5 mins when they incredibly missed their 3/4th chance. Devoid of confidence.

Chicksen impressive, and fouled/pushed for one of their early chances.

Helped clearly by their injury and substitution but very even for 30 mins of first half and we were better side in second. Confidence clearly grew.

Even ignoring our goal I thought the corners were better, more threatening from Barnett.

BT coverage is appalling.

To be fair to the director and cameramen, the pictures were fine, but the commentary and punditry was extremely poor.

I thought the commentators came with a clear 'establishment view' agenda today to imply that Ardley shouldn't have been sacked and to question Notts County's "moneyball" recruitment policy. The use of such a lazy phrase pretty much sums up the level and value of the observations that were made. Several times the lead commentator contrived to set up the colour commentator to voice was what clearly a pre-prepared "script", under the loose pretence that they were talking about fans' opinions. I'd love to know why commentators these days seem to think their opinions are needed or wanted. Just call the game and leave the viewers and fans (who know a lot more about their clubs than commentators who are just dropping in for a few hours) to form their own opinions.

Wouldn't be surprised if they dropped the ref off as well, I thought he was awful for most of the game. How did their player that fouled Roberts avoid a yellow card? I don't get the second yellow for Wootton. If it's a deliberate elbow it's a straight red, if it isn't it's no foul.

Great post they were hoping we'd lose just so they could put the boot in.

Fans opinions means they looked at social media which is 50/50 on the sacking.

They also said the players might "like" Ardley well I dont care what they want they arent lifelong fans.

We were denied 2 penalties imo and the one on Knight they described as clumsy in other words its a foul but they didnt want to say that.

We could have been 3-0 down after 10 minutes and we rode our luck but overall we didnt deserve to lose the game.

Ref had a shocking game through out. I don't get how Wootton gets a booking for for a geniune challange for the ball but there guy who clearly swings out at Rawlinson get's nothing but a quick talking too.

The referee didn't give a free kick. Wootton and their player challenged for the ball, both missed it and it ran through to the keeper. The ref then stopped play for the head injury and booked Wooton. He restarted play by dropping the ball to the keeper. He didn't know what he was doing.

Tbf the handball(?) couldn't be given because it wasn't exactly conclusive when viewed multiple times on replays in slow motion. The ref didn't have a good view of it with players in the way.

Not a classic but a much better performance (after the first 15 min) and what could prove to be a very important result. All of a sudden I feel optimistic again, onwards & upwards. COYP

Don’t know if anyone else as covered it. But, the player who took a dive to try and win a penalty. Absolute disgrace.

One of the few decisions the ref got right.

Was a great spot by the ref yet the commentators were very reluctant to just say "he dived, was clear simulation, tried to cheat" when viewing on the replays.

Didn't the referee have an unusual name today? First time I've come across an 'Owain Glyndŵr' officiating at this level. Mind you those commentators Jones The Words and Evans The Comment seemed to be very knowledgeable.

COYP!

More like Evans the Death, or Organ Morgan. Looking at the rest of Milk Wood though , perhaps Blind Captain Cat might have been a better fit

I'd love to know how the ref came to the conclusion that the challenge on Knight was not a penalty & a goal kick to them.

Ref had a shocking game through out. I don't get how Wootton gets a booking for for a geniune challange for the ball but there guy who clearly swings out at Rawlinson get's nothing but a quick talking too.

It might have just been the replay that I saw but I don't think Wootton caught the guy for his 1st booking either but I could be wrong there.

Tbf it looked liked the keeper got both hands on the ball before coming down onto knight. Looked clumsy but nothing in it.

I wonder if the second yellow was for dissent or the ref just forgot il he gave a foul.

The commentators clearly had a bias, wooton first yellow looked to be nothing and a challenge after half time they played it up like Wootton was lucky to be on the pitch but again i couldn't see much in it.

Honestly don't think any of those fouls by Wootton were fouls

The reaction of the Notts players suggested the ball hit his hand, and there was some evidence that it did on one of the camera angles. It's one of those penalties I don't like to see given, but the rule now seems to be that if the ball makes contact with a hand in an unnatural position (ie making the body bigger), it's a penalty. His hand was raised above well his head, but when it was shown from the ref's line of vision I could see why he didn't give it.

Adam Virgo and Somerton

That is the same pairing we've had for every live match on BT since dropping down to the NL and people have complained about them being biased before, the play off final springs to mind. Virgo, as well as beginning his career with Brighton - was born there, so presumably he grew up supporting the Seagulls and would have been 8 years old when we beat them at Wembley. Maybe he still bears us a grudge for that.

Wootton shouldn't have had a single booking, let alone two. How does he end up with his shirt literally torn apart but can't buy a foul against him?

I thought their keeper definitely fouled Knight. Looked like he just wiped him out but got away with it because it was away from the goal.

Exactly, he view was poor. The commentators were unsure at the time with the benefit of multiple replays and angles. I agree with Charlie Slater it was inconclusive on TV so Ref had no option in real time, he has to be certain after all.

The (nearest) players strong reaction all indicate it hit a hand but obviously you can't give it based on the reaction of 3 players.

I wouldn't have given a penalty in the game for either side. The current handball rule is a bit of a joke.

No idea why people are wetting their knickers about the commentary. Wrexham were in form, we weren’t. They started really well, we didn’t. Lots of fans think someone in the media is ‘biased’ against their team, it’s mostly paranoid bolox. I thought the commentators were more honest than Slater or Curtis.

Concentrate on the positives.

Just watched the game due to work.

I have a question about Wootons sending off and apologies if covered. Wooton was booked for a 2nd time yet the game restarts with a drop ball. So was it a foul or not?

Unless it was for dissent? Either way, the ref didn't have a particularly good game, the commentary team were their usual selves but we got 3 points so I am happy tonight

Surely they can’t be biased towards our opponents every time! - I watched the game today and didn’t notice any bias

Do you think BT are biased against Notts County?

Wootton having a game off may not be a negative in the long run

Good call. And easier for the coach than dropping/resting him.
How long will the suspension be?

Not wetting my knickers, giving my opinion. Current form had nothing to do with the in game commentary. They did start positive, but they didn’t control the game as McLean went onto say after the game. The commentary was like a Wrexham love in and not complimentary to Notts. The dive by their player when he got booked was brushed aside. There were no real views given on the Whooton sending off, which was very harsh at best. My opinion.

And I do concentrate on the positives. But, I believe the commentary was worth a mention.

For the record, Slater and Stallard call it as it is. If Notts are poor, they don’t hold back. Again, my opinion.

They did give a view. Said it was harsh and that he had his eyes on the ball at all times. Also that he had walked a disciplinary tightrope. Did you need 10 mins of it was or wasn’t a sending off?

And you are entitled to your opinion, which I respect. But I thought the commentary was very pro Wrexham.
