After announcing his bid for the Tory leadership, Sunak said very little on Russia-Ukraine or foreign policy in general. Since March, however, he has been attracting scrutiny both from his own party and the opposition due to the Russian presence of a company in which his wife has a £400m ($474m) stake. And according to recent reports, Johnson has voiced concerns that Sunak may “go ‘soft’ on Russian President Vladimir Putin and his war in Ukraine, and ease sanctions on Russia if elected prime minister.

So what do you suggest to stop Ukrainians being executed and raped by murderous scum?

It's realpolitik (as also demonstrated in Biden's arm bumping with the Saudi crowned prince). Putin is fully aware of the disruption and mayhem it would cause should he decide to turn off his gas supply to Europe completely. Yes, it is a major source of his country's income and would-along with existing sanctions-seriously hurt the ordinary Russian people but as long as he has enough money to devote to his war in Ukraine he won't care. His hope will be that economic pressures disrupt European unity and support for Ukraine and he won't mind a long war of attrition there as long as he wins.

Forget who said it, but read an article recently criticising the West for not seeing the danger Putin (as well as China) pose early enough and not taking steps to wean themselves off Russian gas long ago. The signs were all there but trade/profit were always going to trump such voices and hindsight is always a wonderful thing.

The West and NATO need to stay strong iMHO as the long term consequences of allowing Putin his victory will likely outweigh shorter term economic hardships.

Totally agree. Some though care more about their own businesses and cozy lives than Ukrainians being executed, raped and bombed!

It makes me sick to the back teeth when discussing tax cuts Sunak uses “ we could all be poorer “. This pair of absolute shysters will never be poor being billionaires and care more about making even more money - even back in the land of Hitler 2!
