With Baj, Bostock and Palmer out injured we’re looking thread bare in the midfield. Looking at free agents I see Josh Onomah, Luke Amos and Matty Longstaff all without a club. Amos and Longstaff certainly have had injury problems but is it worth the risk now taking a punt?

Liam Bridcutt perhaps

Depends on his fitness levels and how much or how little age has diminished his abilities. The version of Liam Bridcutt that ran Brighton's midfield when they won League One would fit brilliantly into our similarly possession-based style, but that was over a decade ago (when Martin Allen was managing us). Bridcutt's now 34 and his career looks to be on the wane, but if he's still three-quarters of the player he was back then, maybe he could do a job for us until Matt Palmer returns.

Of course, this could be an opportunity to sign a midfielder who brings the one thing Matt Palmer couldn't, namely height and physicality. He'll still need to be able to play and pass, otherwise he won't fit into our team, but we have been needing something more robust in midfield anyway, as demonstrated particularly when we got a bit 'out-manned' by Mansfield and Wrexham.
