Probably the best team we can put out with what we've got:

ps - Swale, please can you format the thread title to the usual.

A stronger team and squad - Cameron and McGoldrick in for Morais and Mahovo

Love that LW is going with his strongest line-up...

I believe this is 71 league games since LW took over - ALL with a back 3. Good for LW that he's sticking to his guns.

Will be interested to see if it's Bostock and Austin or Bostock and Crowley in the midfield.

the_anticlough
22-12-2023, 07:29 PM
Yes, it'd be a surprising if it was Crowley though. LW's gone with Sam so many times now, despite all the evidence it hasn't worked.

Whenever I've seen Stockport (i.e L2 play-offs last season) what strikes you most is what a physically imposing side they are. I'm hoping for a strong ref tonight - so Crowley, Austin, Nemane, Jones and Maca (nothing like the brick ****houses they have) can play their games.

Listen to LW's pre-match interview - he said it, but it was already a known fact. Didn't a Notts fan catch him in a coffee bar there and post it on X? Flat white and a sweetner iirc.

I just don't like this agenda thing, if people have been mad last few weeks that's cause we've played crap, there's no agenda implying that people are happy when Notts lose. I really hate that notion that some Notts fans want them to lose so they can moan, it's put on here all the time and it's absolute nonsense. You're not a twonk sorry but we're all happy Notts are playing well. And yes I wish I hadn't brought that up about where LW lives after the trouble it caused ha ha.

Real shame about the goal we conceded. Maybe Bostock's man but I don't like to see the ball going in with the keeper standing up and pointing.

We've been much more positive today, especially with the passing out from the back.
I thought the two returnees, Didzy and KC, have looked rusty and off it. Baldwin has been the best player on the pitch IMO

Stall saying Notts have been arguably the better team
Bracegirdle noting that it's night and day between the Harrogate performance, so far.

We've had much more of the play and we look good.

Hard to say what the formation is but it's working.

We have had no problems playing out. Bostock has been the main receiver but Crowley and Austin have dropped deep to take the ball too.

Baldwin has Beckenbauered out of defence a few times but importantly has taken low risk options when the odds are against him.

The Crowley / Nemane axis has flickered back into life a couple of times.

It feels like October again.

It’s the penetration in the final third. Away commentators always saying we have lots up front, but did we really test their keeper?
Good goal by Didzy, but we just don’t seem to be able to find a way through teams.

And of course, wouldn’t be a Notts defeat without the weekly defender error of their own making.

Poor squad backups who are clearly not league footballers such as Tobi. Nice guy, always laughing and smiling, but is he quality? Nope.

Gosling…what a history and list of credentials. Also what a waste of a shirt. We really need to think about steering clear of these older “need to get fit” guys who don’t have a cat in hells chance of influencing a game from the off on a regular basis.

Spend the money and strengthen significantly in all areas.

Unfortunately , a lot of the blame lies with our recruitment team this year. Nowhere near enough quality beyond first 11. No one can change a match from bench. Should have strengthened better in summer.

We played really well tonight, Stockport top of the league with a few points in hand, won their last home game 8-0. Beat Wrexham 5-0. We had them on the rack for most of the game but unable to create enough to score to get back to 1-1. Caught out pushing forward and then always uphill for the last 10 minutes. Keep that up for the rest of the season and we e nothing to worry about. Stockport or Stags will go up as champions, we will still make the playoffs - I doubt better but I’ll be happy with that at the end of the season.

Yes it is, but the desire to go with such a small squad and retain most of the non league squad has proven to have failed.
In American football, the phrase is ‘next man up’ where a team suffers a significant injury, the guy behind him in that position needs to be good enough and motivated enough to step into that role and make it his own.

Randall, Morias, Gosling, Tobi A, Tipton…

Then add in JoB, Rawlinson, the discussion over stone etc…
And it’s clear we don’t have quality in depth, or depth in size either.

That’s a failure of recruitment and having such a small squad.

As for LW.... There probably are better and more experienced managers out there at the lower levels, but we've had numerous managers with pedigree come to Notts and fail miserably and we can't blame LW for us having the "8th-10th highest budget" in L2.

Given the fact that last season Macca would have knocked a couple in, and that the team seem to have changed addressed many of the issues that have befell us the last couple of games, wholesale changes seem rather drastic aren't they.

Any better recruitment targets were probably taken up whilst we were involved in play-offs, and most people in their right mind would have thought that a team that romped the NL bar Wrexham would likely be worthy of a good run in League 2.

Stone appears to be a bit of a disappointment, has he, or Slocombe, ever saved a penalty?

Panic buying over the January is not the answer though quite why Gosling hasn't shown his class I don't understand.

I'd have thought there was a lot to build on from tonight and I'd be surprised if LW isn't fairly pleased.

Have you seen the size of American Football squads, not a great analogy.

Due to the fact they have three separate teams so to speak with O D and ST.
You move that to 11 main players across the whole game and there is always a player who wants it behind the player who is currently in.
Budget…yes I agree cash is king, but if we want to play in the style we do consistently, regardless of manager, then the recruitment needs to be spot on when bringing in and knowing when to cut players.

Let’s not make him a scapegoat, but Randall? Can anyone see Junior Morias leading our attack line for a long period of time? Rawlinson. Love his commitment and loyalty to the club, just like JoB, but they’re not up to the standard we need.

Money wasn’t supposed to be the issue, more of a philosophy.
I reckon we need bigger, stronger for a reason.

On a side note, I thought Cameron played ok tonight. I’ve made my dislike of his style of play known, but fair play tonight, he stayed on his feet, ran the ball forwards more and commanded the back line.
Play like that every week though please KC!

Anyway, Doncaster have lost two on the bounce at home and seem to be returning to the form that saw them slump to rock bottom earlier this season. Notts absolutely need to win on Boxing day.

Yes they are, but unlile us they were so well beaten by Stockport in their equivalent fixture that any talk of a comeback was out of the question.

His point was that Wrexham would've got something out of that game, but we have empirical evidence that Wrexham would not and did not get anything out of Stockport away, apart from a -5 hit to their goal difference, hence why I think it's a silly point to try and argue.

Having not listened to or seen the game it sounded from reading posts on here like we were much better and looking at this one game in isolation there is no shame to come back from Stockport having lost by one goal. A shame an individual error cost us again for the penalty as we may have scraped a draw and the fact it is our third league defeat in a row.

The positive has got to be the performance because if we can go to Stockport play well and receive complimentary comments from Dave Challinor then this bodes well for the second half of the season.

I guess it was written in the stars that Kyle Wootton would score against us.

We might have lost three league games in a row but Doncaster and Morecambe are now two opportunities to put in some performances at home and get back to winning ways.

All the positives aside we just keep giving away terrible goals game after game, if LW had hair he would be tearing it out, positives obviously a decent performance but that's just another defeat on our way to midtable, probably where I would have been so happy with at the start of the season if I'm honest

Last night was a free hit in many ways because of the low expectations after the recent subpar performances. We need to build on it next week, where nothing less than six points will be enough against Doncaster and Morecambe. It’s important that we put in a top performance on Boxing Day and get back to being our old selves again (although a few clean sheets would be most welcome - think we’ve only had two all season).

Interesting to see how Bradford have found their form since that first half mauling against us - now only four points behind with a game in hand. Some on here predicted that revival, but I was definitely not one of them.

pjace, he basically swapped with McGoldrick, and played some lovely one touch passes of varying distances to keep the momentum in the attack. He was also able to carry the ball at pace, usually across the line to bring others into play, as a consequence any shots were from distance, and he will need time to adjust to this, but could be lethal.

Maca was much more involved but I don't think you could call it a success. Didzy was poor until the final few minutes and his goal. And we put so many great balls into the box from wide positions but it was Stockport defenders who got there first almost every time.

Interesting to see how Bradford have found their form since that first half mauling against us - now only four points behind with a game in hand. Some on here predicted that revival, but I was definitely not one of them.

Yep, they were 18th before and after they played us just 5 weeks ago. With the game in hand they could now just be a single point behind us.

On an 8 game current form table we're 2nd bottom. Only FGR are worse on goal difference.

I understand the need to focus on the positives, particularly the manager and within the camp, but as a mere onlooker we were behind from the 7th minute and chasing the game, the onus was on us to attack and look for the forward pass, which we did, but that's absolute basics. Notts most likely need LW to stick around if we're going to follow through with the upwards trajectory in the foreseeable, but last night's interview left me feeling a bit concerned that he's either losing the plot and struggling to cope with the pressure he puts himself under or he is now in a position where he's having to think about making a very big decision.
If offered the Swansea job he'd be insane not to take it. Sheehan however is the 4/6 favourite again after they won last night, LW drops to 2/1.

I went last night in the hope that we’d take the game to Stockport and get back to the way we can play.
We did that to the point where I left feeling we’re not going to drop into mid table mediocrity.
There’s no getting away from two very poor goals, but outside of that we were outstanding. Baldwin was the best player on the pitch and Cameron also had a very good game.
Didsy playing up top with Langstaff playing deeper gave us more energy and I’d like to see that again.

It did sound like we were the better team, even Stockport fans said that. We were getting predictable with Langstaff up front, all teams needed to do was stop his supply and catch us on the break. We need to swap it around and keep teams wondering, even during the game.

Onwards and hopefully upwards

In the cold light of day then really pleased with the performance last night. Disappointed to lose after playing so well but we dominated top of the league on their patch. We also did have chances at 1 nil down to get back into the game so we did create one or two openings. The lack of quality in the final 3rd could have been better I agree but also once they went 1 nil up, Stockport kept their shape and played deep very well, they have some good players. If we play like that over Christmas then think we'll be looking at 6 points.

As for ECU, he went abit far with the mum comment definitely, I don't like the idea though of permanently disqualifying an obviously passionate Notts fan.

Does anyone know, who was offside for our disallowed goal. I have watched it from the match stream angle, and from behind the goal that their fans were standing, and I cannot see who is offside, admittedly both were viewed on my phone, as I am still in hospital.

They said it was handball against Didzy and then offside as well, I must admit I wasn't sure as the time and still aren't.

Sorry about that. Was just saying that, despite conceding 2 poor goals, I was encouraged by our performance last night. To put in a performance like that against top of the league must give us the confidence to believe we can compete at the top end of the table, particularly with a couple (at least) of astute signings in January.
My concern for Monday is whether we can repeat the energy and intensity we played with last night, which is so important to us.
LW is still the man to take our club forward.

Merry Christmas everyone.

But if you want to have Christmas tomorrow be my guest, but don't expect too many at the Lane on your personalised Boxing Day!

Last nights performance was a great improvement, playing Langstaff deeper worked really well however i think Stockport adopted the wrong tactics against us. I was very surprised that They didn't press our defenders or midfield as they surely know we struggle against that. This is why we were allowed to play with more patience and find more space. It will be interesting to see if we can play with the same confidence and positivity when we are being constantly pressed and being marked man to man

They did press us from the start but we forced them back because we did it so effectively.
The second half they sat back and gave us half the pitch.

Strange highlights them. Doesn't show our disallowed goal or the other decent chance we had.

Anyway, I was at the game. Thought a draw would have been a fair result and reflection of the chances created by both sides. Maybe a win for us if all the decisions had gone our way.

I'm definitely feeling a bit more positive about the next few games. It's Tranmere away that worries me slightly though.

Listening to Stockport's manager and seeing the comments of many of the Stockport fans, they are hugely complimentary about the way Notts played, describing us as undoubtedly the best they've faced this season. Of course, it's easier to be magnanimous if you've walked off with the three points, but I think the comments are genuine.

We are, in effect, where Stockport were last season. We know we are good enough to be more than competitive at this higher level, but now it's a case of taking everything that is (widely acknowledged as) good about our game and building upon it by ironing out the weaknesses (defensively). This certainly isn't the time to be changing everything just because of a few adverse results, any more than our good results up to October were reason to conclude we were unstoppable. It's a learning process, and taking things in the round, we're doing fine for the stage we're at.

Were they singing Cooper's name this afternoon? That could become awkward in the coming months if they do. Newcastle and Man Utd up next for them. Luton with a game in hand.
They're now on course to finish with 30 points, Luton increase to a projected 27, Burnley 23, Sheff Utd 19. The gap is closing.

Part of the game now. Pundits on TV back the players for doing it, often with comments like, 'He had no choice'.

Still a terrible decision for 2nd yellow though.

Still a terrible decision for 2nd yellow though.

I wish FIFA/UEFA/FA could be as nimble as the NBA at making rules changes. 'Take fouls' - no attempt to play the ball when the other team is breaking is now punished by free throws + possession, not just a foul and the other team keeps possession. So this season the 'take foul' (this is probably where the phrase 'take one for the team' came from) has been largely eliminated. And it's changed the game, it flows better and is even faster now.

Making fouling someone with a clear path to goal, or fouling without any attempt on the ball, punishable by a penalty kick and it'd be eliminated instantly, for the benefit of the sport.
