Has anyone else ever noticed that there’s two junctions on the M6 both numbered 21a?

This is in addition to Junction 21.

I’ve never understood the logic of having two separate junctions numbered the same.

I was reading on the driving test thread what 68 said about his mate going past a junction and then reversing back down the motorway, it reminded me of my own idiocy at these junctions when I was 18 back in 79.

I took the first 21a junction by mistake when going up to Harrogate as a newly qualified driver for the first time, when I realised my error I got into the hard shoulder and reversed half a mile back onto the M6!🤔😳

Roads were a lot quieter then but it was still a stupid act on my part.

I wondered if anyone else had noticed this strange situation on the M6?

Are there any other stupidly designed sections of road that you’ve come across?

It’s madness Scoop, there has to be half a mile or more between these two 21a junctions, it doesn’t even mention easy or west.

If someone tells you to take 21a to get to them the majority of people would turn off at the first 21a as I did that first time.

I realise sat nav’s nullify this to a large degree these days but who in their right mind would initially put the plan in place to number two junctions a distance apart exactly the same?

It was so simple to name them 21a and 21b or 21e and 21w.
