Morecambe have been deducted three points by the English Football League for failing to adhere to an agreed decision imposed in August 2023 after the club failed to pay players on time.

The League Two side were given a suspended three-point deduction (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66573972) at the time and that has now been activated.

The Shrimps slip from 12th to 14th and their slim play-off hopes are now all-but over.

Owner Jason Whittingham has also been fined £10,000.

That amount is payable immediately and Whittingham has also been given a suspended fine of £20,000 to be activated on 31 May 2024, unless he complies in full with his obligation to replenish the deposit account under the terms of the agreed decision dated 17 August 2023.

Whittingham had been told to deposit an amount equal to 125% of their monthly wage bill to cover any future delays in August last year.

The EFL stated that the following month the deposited funds had been used without being re-deposited however, and they were charged in December (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/67753997).

The club said in a statement that "the board express their significant disappointment at the outcome of the hearing".

Wonder how the EFL can enforce the fine if the owner does not pay it?

Mad how a team we absolutely annihilated 5-0 has had 3 points deducted and they’re still above us.

Sutton probably think the same about us!

Doncaster have a decent chance of the playoffs and were dead and buried a few weeks ago...just shows what putting a run together can do for ya

Either way… we went on a horror run and we have seen an all but guaranteed playoff spot disappear

The play off spot was not guaranteed. We were struging under LW. Im not saying SM is any better or equal to LW, I dont feel he is. But, resukts and performances had started to slide

Fair point. Though we did have our keeper sent off in after 10 minutes in the first game. Not sure how you’d excuse the second game, one of the biggest shambles I’ve seen.

Aren't Morecambe the victims of a similar Munto experience?

Not quite, their owners were the same people who owned Worcester Warriors (I think) and they have no money

That they had, BJPIE. And it seems like the problems in defence he had then haunt us still.

I didn’t put it was guaranteed. My point remains that despite the horror run (regardless of when it started) could or should we have picked up 9 more points than we did? That for me is the frustration of this season. Top 4 aside, the rest have been average.

Nothing was guaranteed but home results were holding up well, and would have been good enough alone to get us in the playoffs. I’m still not clear why they slumped so badly. (Mainly cos no one is ever asked).

Because we'd been found out. NL standard defence hasn't helped, not much a manager can do about that. And yes we were on the slide. Summer rebuild, Scott and Palmer fit and we will be up there.
