Not many could have predicted the topsy-turvy Championship table after 13 matches.
The top seven clubs were all in the Championship last season, the eighth club, Charlton, have just come up from League One.
The three relegated Premier League clubs are in 9th, 14th and 21st position.
As for Swansea, they are languishing in 16th place playing mostly safety first football, seemingly trying not to lose games rather than trying to win them.
Maybe expectations were too high after we made some quality signings in the summer, but the warning signs were there when we couldn’t even win pre-season friendlies against lower league opposition.
This is how three of the four clubs who have beaten us this season have fared:
- Birmingham have won only two from ten games before and after they beat us.
- QPR have lost their two games since beating us at the .com.
- Leicester have won only two in the last ten games including the Swansea win and have had a draw and three defeats since they beat us at the .com.
Southampton have won only one in ten games and have had three straight defeats since that embarrassing one sided draw (21 shots, 8 on target) against us and they have just sacked their manager.
Is it the over-cautious approach by Sheehan that’s holding us back, is it his formation and tactics, is it his hesitation to use subs at the right time, is he playing his strongest team in matches, are the new players getting a fair chance or are they not up to expectations?
Or, are we unjustly criticising him because our expectations are too high?
This is not the way we played last season when he was in temporary charge, why has he changed his ideas. Surely he must realise that he got the job because of the impressive attacking football and that unbeaten run.
Coming up this week before the International break are two tough matches, away to Preston on Wednesday and home to Ipswich on Saturday.
Let’s see how many points we get from those matches, where it will then be a third of the season gone.
