re: Classic Match Reports
Wonderful day especially as we were the real underdogs and weren't given a chance of winning, which was probably fair when you looked at the team Man City put out.Their front line read Summerbee, Bell, Lee, Law, Marsh, todays value about £100 million at least.

Unfortunately for me I was too young to remember this.
I certainly remember winning the same trophy against the European Cup holders 6 years later though ;D
What's the west brom one?
Beating a poor Man Utd side in the 70's?

Having watched the match on youtube a couple of times, I can say that Gary Pierce's play stood out to me. Made several quality saves and important decisions throughout the match.
"There had been City's 20 minute spell to contend with at the start of the second-half when the game might easily have been lost, but the assault yielded only the one goal and in the end victory went to the better team."
I was there and agree with the summing up. Overall, we were the better team, regardless of City's bigs.
A couple of additional bits of information. It was reported that McGarry only played Richards, who had been quite ill, for his ability to be in the right place at the ri

Agreed we were classed as underdogs but that was one hell of a Wolves side!
If in terms of todays transfer market their frontline would be worth £100 Million, then ours of Wagstaffe, Richards, Dougan, Hibbitt, would be worth £99 Million! ;)

I've always said this eve.
Yes, we dominated most of a decade in the fifties ;D but we had a bloody good side in the early seventies also.
We had a bit of a blip then had another decent side late seventies also.
The days when The League Cup meant a lot more.
Emlyn Hughes lifting the trophy...
"And Wolves are back in business", the commentary went.
Bloody hell, talk about foot

Our last cup win is brought back by the E&S as they put out the match report for the 88 League Trophy triumph. Many of you were amongst the 80k there that day I reckon.
Was hoping we would have really gone after it in this cup last season, but league is always the priority with the finances so drastic between divisions - view external link
