Unique football club names in this country

It never ceases to amaze me how some clubs have got their names since competitive football started in this country. In a lot of cases it's interesting to me and maybe other football fans how they originated in the first place . The latest one brought to my attention is a little known team in Es*** who play in the Isthmian League and who go by the name of Brightlingsea Regent which I am told is an amalgamation of two clubs. A bit like Rushden And Diamonds really in a similar vein. Going to the other end of the scale you could include Sheffield Wednesday as well as a few others if you took time out to look into it. There may even be scope on this subject for a radio / tv programme . The choice and stories behind some of these clubs would be endless but very interesting all the same. Anyone else want to mention a few more and the story behind the name ?

Scotland has a lot and many of these clubs were formed before Burnley.

Celtic - Glasgow named after the Irish immigrants for whom the club was founded

Hibernian Edinburgh named after the Latin name for Ireland

Hearts Edinburgh Hearts formed in 1874 by a group of friends from the Heart of Midlothian Quadrille Assembly Club (Dancing). Edinburgh is known as and has the Heart of MIdlothian mosaic in the High St.

Queen of the South - Dumfries got its nickname Queen of the South from David Dunbar, a local poet, who in 1857 stood for Parliament in the General Election. In one of his addresses, he called Dumfries "Queen of the South" and this became synonymous with the town.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle comes from the merger of two teams, Caledonian and Inverness Thistle, a third team Clachnacuddin didn’t join and continues.
They beat Celtic Away 3-1 in a cup shock soon after formation, getting the headline “Super Caley go ballistic Celtic are atrocious”;D

St Mirren - Paisley is named after Saint Mirin, the founder of a church at the site of Paisley Abbey and Patron Saint of Paisley.

Greenock Morton - the general consensus is that the club was named after the 'Morton Terrace', a row of houses next to the original playing field, where some of the players lived

St Johnstone comes from an early name for Perth - St Johns toun - the town where St Johns church is located.

1877 A Football Club is formed in Crewe, as a separate organisation from the successful Crewe Cricket Club. They take the name 'Alexandra' after Princess Alexandra.

The original town club, Accrington, was amongst the twelve founder members of the Football League in 1888, before resigning from the league after just five years. A team called Stanley Villa already existed at the time, named as such because they were based at the Stanley W.M.C. on Stanley Street in Accrington.

Forest Green Rovers F.C. is the one that beats me! They really should be called Nailsworth F.C. or something like that and have the lowest population of fans in any town in England.

Shouldn’t it be Green Forest Rovers too?

Gala Fairydean Rovers plays in the Lowland League in Galashiels. Gala is what locals call the town. There was a Fairydean Mill in nearby Peebles so I presume there is a link to that, but can’t confirm it.

Inverness Clachnacuddin the name is an English approximation of a Scots Gaelic name meaning 'the stone of the tub,' referring to a city landmark.
