The word iconic is used far too loosely but this man deserves it.
Although I believe he never won an Olympic gold, he's iconic not just for the feat but for his work as a neurosurgeon which he always felt was the greater achievement.
His 4 minute mile broke through "impossible" barriers.
Bob Beamon's feat of missing out on 28 feet something and going straight to 29 feet plus was possibly even more of an impossible barrier.
Bannister was a gentleman. We need more of those.
A few more like Roger Bannister and the world would be a much better place. RIP.
This was the Miracle Mile at The Commonwealth Games that year between the 2 men who broke the 4 min barrier. Bannister and John Landy. Dr Bannister stormed home to pip Landy in his final major race of his career. He retired at the end of 1954 to pursue his work in medicine.
