Stevie Woods
Every time I see that guy I break into a cold sweat. Watching him on the scotland bench last night jotting something down on a piece of paper, if you watch he does the same in the Celtic dugout as well. Iv'e came to the conclusion he's writing for his autobiography....He's reached chapter 2 "the blunders I made in a well jersey" He'll be there a while.

By all accounts he's a very good coach and highly thought of in the game.
However as a goalkeeper? No Motherwell fan who saw him play needs reminded of just how much of a bombscare he was.
Whenever I hear his name I immediately think of THAT mistake against Rangers twenty years ago in the Scottish Cup at Fir Park. 2-1 up with minutes remaining and fairly comfortable. A Rangers attack breaks down as a harmless ball trundles through to Woods. He can pick it up or blooter it out the back but for some reason he tries to pass it out wide but only succeeds in passing it straight to the Rangers player who duly scores and we lose the replay 3-0.
He made many, many blunders in his time with us but that one topped the lot.

For added hilarity, Durie's shot wasn't even on target until our hero tried to save it...

After a few swear words last night when his bonce pooped up on screen my son who is twenty one asked what was wrong with me. That was the story I told him, How Woods made one monumental f*** up against Rangers in the cup. Even my son now hates the guy.

That's correct about Durie's effort not being on target, it clipped Woods heel and bounced in. Unbelievable stuff.
He was just hopeless for us and the fact that he was here for nine years and played second fiddle to no fewer than five different goalkeepers during that time is testament to that.

He was at the club for nine years never had a day off week in all that time because he couldn’t even catch the flu or a cold never mind a football

Its strange how he can be such a poor goalkeeper , yet such a good coach. I'm sure there are countless examples of players who never made the grade yet have become great coaches. However, with goalkeeping being such a specialised position, I wonder why he couldn't apply his expertise to his own game! No doubt the answer will be in his autobiography

1 Stevie Woods ... there's only 1 Stevie Woods - thank the Lord. :P

I always wondered what mind have been if we’d had someone like Randolf or Ruddy instead of Woods when we were genuine title contenders in the early to mid 90s. (Edit, 1993/94 season, 4 points from glory)
-
We had Dykstra in 93/4 - he no doubt cost us occasionally but definitely earned more points than he lost.
The narrow final gap that year makes it easy to say what if but it should be remembered Rangers also went to the beach in the last few games - we weren't really as close as the table suggests. It could have been different - though probably not - had we held on to win 1-0 with a superb performance at Ibrox in March rather than losing to a late deflection and idiotic penalty.
Rangers were actually much weaker the next year and if we'd had the 93/4 team then, I think we'd have had a real chance...but Woods in goal, no O'Donnell really, injuries and a brutal winter ended any dreams.
