Safe Standing

There seems to be a bit of momentum on this, Palace fans currently seen to be taking a lead:

Any views from you fellahs?

My view, yeah great but it won't be like the 'old days' but maybe the old days weren't that great anyway apart from for a certain 'demographic' of at least medium height, fairly steady on their feet blokes who didn't mind some push and shove.

I am all for it for more than one reason.

1. There are sufficient fans in support of safe standing at all clubs to warrant it.
2. There would, probably, be 2 Safe Standing areas in grounds. Derby's would be the South Stand for home fans and the SE corner for visiting fans.
3. I stood at the DCFC v BAFC game this season at the back of the South and thorughly enjoyed it, as did everybody else there. The Burton fans, to a man, also stood throughout a game so there is a demand for standing.
4. I have arthritis in both knees and, when seated at a game with a 90 degree thigh/shin angle, I have to stand up and move around every 10 to 15 minutes to alleviate the pain that occurs due to sitting in that position. Impossible if you are in the middle of a row which is why, when not in the South, I always go for an end of row seat.
5. It would increase capacity without the need of major building work

Others may have more reasons for being pro Safe Standing

I suffer from cramp, brought on during waking hours by that 90 degree thing, so have basically the same issue but with (thankfully rare) painful/embarrassing/amusing (to others) outcomes. standing would be a blessed relief

Sympathise chaps...but more objectively it just makes sense. Most away fans and the more vociferous home fans stand anyway and with the back of a seat right in front at trip height it’s anything but safe. Modern terracing is, imo, perfect for the creation of large safe standing areas and, as you say, it should simultaneously increase ground capacity and so reduce ticket prices too.

RP...I only have arthritis in my fingers...the result of various injuries over the years...I’ve been taking Turmeric capsules over the winter and it’s helped enormously. Cheap and very effective imo, might be worth a try. Make sure you get the ones with black pepper extract...seems necessary to make it work.

Standing in the seating area is an disaster waiting to happen. If someone decided to build a terrace with a little fence 1 foot high, every couple of feet, you would rightly say they were insane. But that's what we've got and one day the magic combination of a packed area of standing fans, quite a few unsteady on their feet watching an incident on the pitch and leaning forward and sufficient numbers lose their balance in the right numbers and in the same area, bingo, the domino effect takes hold.

You can be standing safely many rows in front but will not be able to resist that avalanche of bodies coming down behind you. Worse still, you may see it coming and be powerless to save yourself.

If things carry on as they are, it will happen one day, resulting in many injuries and maybe deaths.

Agree 100%. The difference between you and those that make the rules is, I suspect, you actually go to football matches.

In fairness, the rules are that you shouldn't stand and the clubs have tried to enforce it.

There's a compensation claim waiting for an incident where someone has been injured by a falling fan who wasn't made to sit down.

Some seating areas are more dangerous than others, ie where the rows are steeper and closer together.

Yep...you’re right...although I was talking about the rules currently prohibiting the provision of designated safe standing areas.
Britannia Stadium always seems excessively steep to me...might struggle there.

All new build stands will be limited by the building regs rules on stairs, which is 38 degrees I think, maybe the Britannia Stadium was designed to the max

Christ we are a healthy bunch aren't we, I also have arthritic knees!

Fortunately on Sunday I'm in a box so will be a bit more comfortable.

I'm all for safe standing in grounds.
