Alan Gilzean died today
Alan Gilzean, what a player. Very much under rated but a ***** part of Spurs attacking forward line up front with Jimmy Greaves. He did the simple things well, whether it being in the right place at the right time, a deft touch to set up a goal scoring opportunity or finishing off a move in the traditional Tottenham way. I was lucky enough to see him play both for Spurs and Scotland. By today’s standards one of those players that most clubs couldn’t afford. I think he just disappeared when his career came to an end and he seemed to prefer being on his own in his latter years. It’s a real shame at 79 years of age. As someone once said , “The game is about glory, doing it in style. “. He certainly fitted into that category no doubt.
There must be other Clarets out there with fond memories of this brilliant footballer.

He played at Bradford City when they played Spurs in the FA in 1970.
The team was
Goalkeeper Pat Jennings
Defender/Right back Joe Kinnear
Defender Phil Beal
Defender Cyril Knowles
Defender/Centre back Mike England
Defender/Midfielder Steve Perryman
Midfielder Alan Mullery
Forward Alan Gilzean
Forward Jimmy Greaves
Winger Neil Johnson
Winger Roger Morgan
Some players in that side but City managed a 2-2 draw. I remember he blazed a couple over the bar and Spurs got a late equaliser.
They won the replay 5-0 but he didn’t score in either game!
Another giant gone RIP

RIP Alan Gilzean, what a great player, never gave an inch.. ..Reminded me a lot of Andy Lochead in a time here footballers were allowed a bit of contact..
-
As others I watched him play many times and impressed and worried of the damage he was always capable of doing to us.
R.I.P.

I remember Alan Gilzean for one particular game, it sort of epitomised what it meant to be a Burnley fan for most of the time. January 1966, I'd been on my travels, down to Bournemouth where we drew in the Cup, beat them 7-0 in the replay with Andy Lochead scoring five, to Goodison to see Gordon Harris make his debut for England against Poland, then down to White Hart Lane for the 4th round of the Cup.
Inside the first five minutes Willie Irvine put us two up, it was too good to be true, it couldn't last, and it didn't, Alan Gilzean scored twice to put Spurs level, Willie got his hat trick to put us in front again, Spurs equalised again. Then as we were all looking forward to the replay at Turf Moor, with two minutes to go Gilzean hit a screamer from a long way out to get his hat trick and win it for Spurs.
I can't say I have fond memories of Alan, but I do remember him well !!!

I recall he did not do much running, always wanted the ball played to his feet and then BOOM...
R.I.P. Alan, you were one of the best.

I remember him as one of those players who didn't seem to be putting much effort in. In those days it didn't matter as much as today, and his skill and physicality shone through.
Very fond memories of Burnley v Spurs games in that era and he was always a danger to us.
