One of the most wonderful Motherwell wins took place at Ibrox on this date. The side had earned a Scottish Cup replay by coming back from two goals down at Fir Park but few gave them a real chance in Glasgow. A sell out crowd of nearly 90,000 saw Rangers go 2-1 in front but they had no idea what was to come. Pat Delaney equalised with a free kick before Bobby Roberts poked home on the hour mark to give ‘Well the lead. Further goals from Ian St John and Roberts gave a famous 5-2 victory which is still sung about to this day.

After the sensational win at Ibrox in the previous round, there were high hopes that the Scottish Cup could make a return to Fir Park. The visit of local rivals Airdrie proved to be a massive disappointment as high scoring Motherwell were repelled by an inspired display from goalkeeper Leslie. The Diamonds grabbed an undeserved winner against the run of play to set up a semi final with Celtic.
I left Fir Park as a ten year old holding back tears!
