For me the Saint and Greavsie show was the start of football becoming dumbed down on TV.
Saint making a forced laugh and Greavsie rolling from side to side continually repeating “It’s a funny old game” didn’t do it for me I’m afraid.
Saint was a very good player and Greaves is one of our greatest ever and this is what they should be remembered for.
I enjoyed watching him as a player and the Saint and Greavsie show was loved by many and was an extremely popular show. I brought to football a clean funny humorous take whilst being informative, unlike nowadays with the spitting, diving, play acting and disgusting other habits associated with today’s game and the other over scrutinising by pundits who perhaps know less about the game than they think they do.
RIP fella.
Sorry to hear that news. There was one good thing to come out of Saint and Greavsie. That was the Skinner and Baddiel impersonations. Still watch them now and then on YT.
I remember the Liverpool Leeds final in 1965. I adopted Leeds that day and was gutted by St John's diving header winner. But it was a good goal and I think it was the first time we heard the old Ey Ay Adio song. Gerry Byrne carried on playing with a broken collar bone. What an example to the namby pamby darlings we have to endure today. Screaming like girls when someone touches them.
