An explanation for Cambridges success.

If you analyse the table, there is only one big city big team in the league, thats Bradford. The constituents of Div 4 are appalling, Harrogate, Barrow, Forest green, shocking. In past years there were always big city teams in div 4. And they would get out quickly.

United are competing in a league against other teams with the same financial clout as Cambridge. If you look at Div 3, all the big teams are at the top.

The fact that Cambridge are competing well against other Cambridge type teams is good, but even that is on the slide.

If United go up, and dont seriously strengthen, then their div 3 tenure will be brief and very painful.

If you look at Northampton, a similar club, while United have been back in the football league, they seem to have been promoted, and relegated at least twice, third relegation coming. Going up is no big achievement.

What puts things in perspective is that going up for United is a big thing, from any league, because the club has been shot through with failure for more that a quarter of a generation.

Even winning a game is like winning the lottery.

A bigger perspective is that true competition is dying. Those with money win, those without lose, and drop down the leagues.

This is not sport. Sport is everyone having a chance of winning. That no longer exists. Business wins, buy sky sports, and kill your club.

There are identifiable leagues within leagues. The current div 2 or div 4 in reality, is almost a non league set up. Anyone, apart from Bradford, have no chance in div 1 or 3, unless they have long term serious investment like Peterborough.

You cant build a ground and squad like that on gates of 4 to 6 thousand. Your club is where it is, it wont change. The chance of success now isnt on the pitch, but how to attract high investment.

Cambridge v Colchester, forever, United v Cobblers forever, Stevenage,,,,, etc..... If you worked for a firm in a job with no hope of betterment or promotion.....unless there is a chance of hitting the jackpot, in my mind there is no point.

I hope United go up, the entertainment will be priceless.
