I've just watched Toon v QPR from 1979.We won 4-2 with goals from Peter Withe 2 Tommy Cassidy and Alan Shoulder.
Both goals for QPR were scored by future Toon players Paul Goddard and Glen Roeder.
Another game I had missed when I was away at sea.

Canny.
Ok, question-thinking about that game-and the state of football then and the state of it now....would you rather be watching now or back then?
The highlights were very good but I would like to have seen 90 minutes to give a true comparison, all in all there was 22 British players on the pitch working hard and there was plenty of skills on show with players on much lower wages so I would say I much prefer the football from those days.
Lol. This was my first ever visit to St James and what a game it was. I remember Shoulder’s lob goal, Peter Withe’s towering header from a corner and a dog on the pitch. I was 10 years old and loved every minute of that day.
For me, the excitement level, entertainment and just about everything else then was a country mile better than today.
I think it was Peter Withe who tried to rugby tackle the dog but it broke the tackle and got away - massive cheer from the crowd!
