Only the Chairman Of The 1922 Committee knows how many Letters Of No Confidence In The Leader have been received by him. The various news media seem to believe that the total thus far is 24. A total of 54 would trigger a Vote Of Confidence in which the electorate is every one of the 358 Conservative MPs.
I would write one if i were an mp. Johnson is obviously a weak leader, he goes with the loudest voice, like his wife, the socialist tories, etc. He has no clear personal direction, but makes it up as he goes along.

The best outcome would be that the 54 Letters needed to have a Confidence vote do get sent.
Then the 358 Conservative MPs vote such that those voting in favour of the incumbent are 188 and those voting against are 170. The normal convention is that such a result would technically be a win for the incumbent but that he would have to resign. However, I would not expect him to resign. Thus there would be civil war in the Conservative Party, which would be the perfect result. He could not be subjected to another Vote Of Confidence for another year.
Meanwhile he would carry on, a very unpopular figure with the electorate, leading to a certain General Election defeat for the Conservatives.
I am sceptical that the official announcement of the arrival of the required 54 Letters to the Chairman of the 1922 Committee will be made next week.
Of course only the Chairman of the Committee knows the exact number of letters. But the Johnson camp have a cunning little ruse to discover the number of Letters.
The Johnson camp arranges that maybe 12 of them send Letters. When the total number of Letters reaches 54 and the Chairman contacts each sender in order for them to confirm or rescind then the 12 Johnson supporters all rescind. They then know that the true number of Letters is 42.
