Minimum Wage & Pay Increased

Said on a previous thread that some businesses such as cafes/restaurants in my town are paying way over the minimum wage to stay open and get the best staff. Staff can pick and choose where they work and understandably will work where the money and benefits are best.

A number of companies are now offering pay increases for the cost of living so staff don’t leave any go to a competitor. This week Asda gave all their HQ staff an extra 2.5% pay increase just for the cost of living. Staff in the supermarkets were awarded an extra £1 per hour which is equivalent to a 10% pay rise approx on the minimum wage. Well done to them! Other businesses will follow.,,

Businesses who don’t follow will either be forced to close or lose their staff, Staff have huge bills to pay which are increasing!

Minimum wage was drawn up in different economic environment .
Buy a flask and make your own sandwiches....

Restaurants/cafes are the tip of the ice berg. For very large corporate companies now to be offering cost of living increases is brilliant to motivate and help keep the staff. Asda giving all supermarket staff £1 an hour extra ( just cost of living ) as already had annual rise is excellent. That could be up to £200 per month extra and they didn’t have to do that!

I always had gone made sandwiches when I was first at work and way into married life Dubs.

I’ve even started to make my own drink of squash to take in the car.

£1.75 for a drinkable bottle of Ribena or the same sort of money for an undiluted bottle of the same stuff I can make 15 or 20 times the number from.

People are poor and lazy these days instead of poor and motivated like most of our generation were.

Don’t disagree but if you have money it’s there to be spent!

Family member just died ( didn’t know him ) and left a huge amount in his bank. Silly old
c unt should have spent it rather than living like Scrooge! Pointless existing before he croaked!

I don’t like unnecessary waste.

I find it easy to make up my own so why not?

I also put one in the freezer so it’s solid ice and it is just “mint” to drink as it melts.

Think you will find that Asda will pay their supermarket staff £10.10 from July so a 1% rise. Because of supply/demand those in distribution within the FMCG sector will probably get more but don't know of a supermarket that pays its staff that well, and certainly not one that is offering anything near the current cost of living rise. If they are lucky supermarket staff might be offered about £10.20 an hour. Well done them eh? 🙄

No it’s £10.50 so an extra £1 per hour and 2.5% for head office staff. Shame on those businesses who have not done the same but they shouldn’t cry when staff move elsewhere. Plenty of jobs in many areas so where that’s the case people can pick and choose.

Sorry Baggieal! I was wrong in that Asda staff not on £10 before their rise but on minimum wage of £9.50 so it is a good percentage rise but still not that good compared to other sectors. I'd read that they were now getting £10.10 (outside of London) not £10.50 but if true that currently makes them the best payers in the "Big Four" supermarkets-something they have never been before

No it’s 10.50 and 2.5% increase for HQ staff. Not great but they didn’t have to do this for cost of living when staff recently had an annual rise. That’s my point - they will ensure happier staff and get some staff from competitors which is what many businesses are doing that will pay extra. Pay no more and don’t cry when your staff leave!
