The Yorkshire Coast.

Over the last few days I’ve done a full sweep of all the seaside towns I remember visiting as a kid along that coast.

The journey from Harrogate out to Bridlington, Scarborough, Whitby and Filey is in a large part very scenic and enjoyable.

The favourite by a mile is Whitby which is the jewel in the crown along that coast.

I enjoyed my first visit to Goathland where TV show Heartbeat was filmed, a lovely, scenic drive across moorland for about three miles to get there as we diverted off on our way to Whitby, I’d highly recommend a visit there on a nice day.

I liked Filey as well, lovely scenery and beach and some very fine period property on the seafront and a well kept promenade.

The town itself was very poor though and very shabby, the place deserves better.

Scarborough was disappointing.

Scenically it has a lot going for it but it looks like it’s on its uppers as a town.

Bridlington was my favourite place as a kid but it’s absolutely shocking now.

Looks like the council have decided to try and outdo Blackpool, the harbour end of the town was awful.

A long stretch of fairground type stuff, banging music and shabby stalls etc manned by p a e d o s and people on the run from the police.

Horrible little hovel off a town now.

Sad to see it at such a low ebb.

Would 100% agree with all that. Love Filey but as you say those lovely period properties could do with a lick of paint. Bridlington is stuck in a 70’s time warp - even the logos on the shops have not changed for donkeys years. Horrible run down town full of yobs. The pub entrances look frequented by drug dealers.

Sadly there are very few coastal resorts now that could be called beautiful. Northumberland is the in place up the North now!

North sea was never appealing to me...sound cold...

Not sure if you have time Mickd but if you are up this way again I would highly recommend the Staithes and the Dinosaur circular walk. It is 11km and you need to be reasonably fit, which I suspect you are, takes around 4 hours or so. Start and park above Staithes,walk down into the village then head south all along the cliffs to Runswick bay (Cleveland Way).

Either go back same way or we prefer to go inland to Hinderwell, then Dalehouse back to car park above Staithes.

Runswick Bay getting back to normal now after I think countryfile tried to promote it, was then full of visitors peeing and leaving rubbish in peoples gardens.
Haven’t been to Dale House for ages the food last time I was there was excellent
Also the walk from Goathland to Grosmont is really scenic

In a couple of weeks I'm off to Scarborough for a week and plan to visit the area including Filey, which has been highly recommended.

It’s so easy to visit all 4 main coastal towns along that stretch but as I stated I’d recommend Filey and Whitby and if you do Whitby then save some time to travel the 10 extra miles to Goathland.

Lovely tea shop there and plenty of memories of Heartbeat, they still have “Aidensfield” on the stores and Post Office and “Scripps” on the garage which is now a shop! 🤣

If you fancy travelling a tad further north then Durham is a lovely city and worth a visit and my cousin who lives there recommends Saltburn although I’ve never visited myself, I’m doing that next time around.

Travel around Yorkshire seems so easy, I left Harrogate this morning after 10.45am and did Filey and Bridlington and was back home in Harrogate at 5.15pm.

I’d highly recommend a day in Harrogate if you have the time, only an hour and a half of scenic driving from Scarborough.

I love Skipton too and Wetherby near Harrogate is very quaint.

It's funny you say that though about Brid, and it being old fashioned and tacky etc. I look at it as being our version of Blacky, but without the tower and the trams and the donkeys and the pleasure beach etc. 😁

Bill, if you have time, apart from Peasholm Park and the outdoor theatre across the road, on the South Bay past the Spa theatre there is the famous clock cafe, if the flag is flying it’s open, cafe itself needs a lick of paint outside but the food is all home made and is nice, the homemade scones are huge
Wife and I are there all next week for the cricket, Scarborough Cricket ground one if the old style grounds

Scarborough football club are on the rise again after they went bust. Just been promoted - new stadium and Jonathan Greening as their manager. Wish we had him!
