O/T Ruskies duped in Indian cricket scam
You wouldn't think they could be so stupid, but read on.
I can't help but see the funny side of this story I just came across on the BBC website.
A group of men from a small village in India faked a whole cricket tournament.
They invented names for the teams, played out the matches and persuaded Russian punters to bet on the matches.
And the 'er' clever bit was that the live coverage broadcast on Youtube had no sound except a running commentary and fake applause.
This allowed the umpire to communicate with his co-conspirators via walkie talkie and he then gave instructions to the players in order to fix the match depending on what bets were placed.
The Russian audience was recruited by the lead scammer who had worked in a pub in Russia previously and had presumably mixed with some big gamblers there.
The lead investigator of the Indian police commented that 'it's just not cricket' *
The only piece of the puzzle we need to solve before setting up our own tournament on the village green is how the Russians paid their stakes.
