Awards dinner

I went to the Awards dinner on Sunday (working), some random thoughts.

It was a new venue for the Awards dinner at the Eden Golf Club. I had been there a few times about 20 years ago but still got lost finding it, but that is . . . err par for the course for me.

When I heard it was going to be in a marque I was dubious but the venue is far more sturdy than a tent in the garden. Pretty and well decorated with nice lighting it was a good venue. Most tables had a couple of players alongside the fans and the fans talked to seemed to really enjoy it.

I didn't partake in the meal, except for a couple of bites of the main course, as I was working, the sticky toffee pudding looked good though.

Owen Moxon won most of the awards as was expected I think. He has had a great season and it's great to see "one of our own" do so well. Goal of the season was Jack Armer at Swindon. I was in the crowd that day and it was special. It would probably have got my vote.

The biggest cheer of the night by some distance was for Players Player of the Season, not just the players everyone got up and clapped Kristian Dennis. He seems to be the players' talisman, much as Jabo was a few years ago.

Ian Milburn (Millie) hosted alongside Adrian and they worked well together. The evening finished with a live band. People got up and danced and were enjoying themselves. I had an hour's drive home, so it was time to leave.

Leaving was a little daunting. In the dark I couldn't find the way out and did a couple of laps of the carpark and surrounding tracks, praying I didn't find myself on the 18th green. Signage needed but that was my only complaint.

The next club party will be the Christmas Party at The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal. It is being organised by Jenkins, Nixon and Pattison.
They have taken on the task of organising it in order to prove that they can organise a p­iss up in a brewery.

I refused to go when I discovered they were serving Grey Squirrel ragu as a starter.

I’m going there, for a do, in a couple of weeks.

The pictures from the awards night are good, I like the trees on the table.

The awards nights not for me, It’s good for the club staff to go to like office/shop etc.

I’ve been to one of these at the shepherds inn, when we won tier 4. It was ok but I wouldn’t personally do it again.

Funniest moment of the evening must have been when Simmo won a 23/24 season ticket in the raffle

I think there is a good case for having two Award nights.

One for the corporate lot - black tie, good food, expensive but small enough to be held in Foxys. They used to do this a few years ago and it was always a good night. They gave out the corporate awards and had their own vote for the corporate goal of the season.

Then I think there needs to be some "Blue Sky thinking", oh how I hate that phrase, but I can't think of a better way of putting it. There are a lot of fans who just can't afford to go, particularly if they have children.

I would have a good look at the Pioneer Stand concourse. It has bars, it has toilets, it has a roof, why isn't it utilised? Do something in the afternoon, something simple, a pie and pea lunch, or similar. Dish out the fans' awards, and give the kids the chance to meet the players. I know there is usually a fun day before the season starts but the kids don't know many of the players then as they are new for the new season. Get some painting on the wall and give it a go.

It seems a shame to pay a lot of money for different venues when it could be done at Brunton Park.

For the second time I've heard the phrase Pie n Peas? Hasn't potatoes hit Cumbria yet,they are lovely,you can boil em,mash em,roast em or fry them,lovey with pie n peas

They have exploited nearly every single way to cook potatoes but I have yet to see anyone attempt 'Toaster Potatoes' where out it pops in bread shaped portions in only two minutes.
