Burnley travel to the West Midlands on Tuesday night no doubt invigorated following their 5-0 thumping of relegation rivals Sheffield United last Saturday. The win prevented the Clarets from being cut adrift at the bottom of the league table.
Any sort of positive result at Molineux could spark a true revival for Vincent Kompany’s beleaguered team, indeed post-match he said, “If those performances keep up, I’m going to keep believing in what these guys can do.” Me too Vinny.
Clearly Burnley have much work to do but Saturday’s home win provided a good start in what would be a remarkable turnaround in fortunes if the Clarets do eventually manage to escape relegation.
There was a collective sigh of relief around Turf Moor after the home team negotiated a win that prevented 8 straight home defeats on the bounce.
Burnley now have 7 points from 14 games, the hosts have 15 points from the same number of games. It is certainly all to play for on Tuesday night.
One’s to watch: The youthful pairing of Zeki Amdouni and Luca Koleosho is now bearing fruits for Vincent Kompany, both managed to get on the score sheet against the Blades. The rejuvenated Jay Rodriguez is looking like his old self and opened the scoring for the Clarets on Saturday.
For the Wolves Matheus Cunha is a real threat and it is worth remembering Gary O’Neil’s side have already beaten Spurs and Manchester City and will provide Burnley with a stern test of their defensive resolve.
Verdict: My predictions have been miles off all season, but I think Burnley might be heading back up the M6 on Tuesday night with a point. I’m going with a 2-2 draw.
Footnote: After Burnley survived the trauma of almost falling through the football league’s trap door in 1987, the following year saw them appear at Wembley in the Sherpa Van Trophy against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Clarets were to lose the game 2-0 against a very good Wolves team but it is fair to say the renaissance of Burnley Football Club began that day. I am hoping the Clarets can continue in the same sort of form they shown against Sheffield United last Saturday. (TEC).
