Turkish Super League Referee Attacked by Football Club President

There was chaos tonight in the Turkish super league game between MKE Ankaragucu
& Cakur Rizespor, with the game ending 1-1.

The referee Halil Umut Meler was knocked to the ground by MKE Ankaragucu president
Faruk Koca, who ran onto the pitch, after his team conceded a 97th minute equaliser
in a 1-1 super league draw, with Caykur Rizespor.
The referee received several blows from others, as he lay on the turf, the incident sparked
chaotic scenes involving players & club officials.

Referee Meler required treatment in hospital, but " Detention Procedures Will Be
Carried Out, After The Treatment " said Turkey's minister of internal affairs
Ali Yerlikaya.
He added that others had been arrested for their part in the incident, which he
" Strongly Condemned ".

The president of Turkey Recep Erdogan condemned the attack.

Referee Halil Umit Meler aged 37 years, is one of Turkey's top referee's & officiated
International games for FIFA, he is also on UEFA's elite referee list.

My opinion is the MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca wants a life time ban from football.

After last nights incident in the MKE Ankaragucu versus Cakur Rizespor game -

Turkish football Federation President Mehmet Buyukeksi confirms, that all matches
in all leagues within the country, have been postponed indefinitely.

Former Newcastle United player Jonjo Shelvey played the full game for Cakur Rizespor.

Should get 5 years in jail for assault.

The punch to the Ref's face was atrocious but the subsequent kick to his head whilst on the deck was beyond belief. Jail both of the thugs!

When he was on the floor, others kicked him in the head according to reports

People have been arrested for injuring a public official.
Maybe thats just how Turkish Law describes it but surely the offence is a lot more serious than that.

Update to Incident.

Turkish Club MKE Ankaragucu - The President Faruk Koca has received a permanent ban for
punching referee Halil Umut Meler, from the Turkish Football Federation.

The club as been fined 2 million lira [£54,000] & ordered to play 5 home games without fans.

The President Faruk Koca later resigned & apologised for his actions.

After the incident during the game, Faruk Koca & 2 others were arrested for, " Injuring a Public Official ".

To the incident - Nothing said has to any criminal proceedings at this time, relating to the referee's assault.


My Tuppence worth of thoughts to the -

Turkish Football Federation making MKE Ankaragucu play their next 5 home games without fans, its the fans
getting punished by this order, where as the fans did not commit any offence.
Which means home fans, & the visiting clubs away fans, are getting punished, a better idea would have been
to allocate a certain amount of free tickets to the fans, with a higher ratio of free tickets to the home team,
say 80 / 20 set number of free tickets.

Surely he wasn't expecting anything less? Turkish football club Ankaragucu are supporting him.

in prison, for " Intentionally Wounding a Public Official ", with a suspended sentence of under
one year, for making threats & violating laws related to violence in sport.
