Good business by the Council gaining the remaining half of Oakwell Stadium and some surrounding land for £1.7 million.
If, as claimed, this venture is "cost neutral" it would be interesting to know what rent Barnsley FC is paying to its landlord the Council over the 30 year lease. Presumably the rent will increase over time.
Flat rate 30 years X £57K pa = around £1.7 million
£57K is a Pontefract Collieries player pa as rent.
The Council ownership keeps away the chancer owners such as the Investor Group and Conway.
The Council have got this for a song but it's better than a property developer getting it for a song that much I do know .
I also think it's reasonably safe to assume the council isn't likely to be run by let's say another party who historically care more about profit than they do about heritage .
The make up of the rental agreement isn't known of course , who pays for what and who is responsible for this and that .
That could potentially lead to problems down the road and it's not uncommon that club and landlord may not always see things the same way , it happens .
Just to add I watched a West Ham fans channel last week with four Hammers very much in the know of the detail surrounding their club's move from Upton Park to the London Stadium .
Access under the Freedom Of Information Act has revealed plenty of skullduggery going on and it may be worth watching how this plays out in East London .
West Ham maybe on the move again and it wasn't the deal that was presented to Hammers fans when they left Upton Park .
It's always worth having a bit of caution when it comes to land exchanging hands even around here and a Labour Council .

Barnsley council have bought 50% shares of the club for a snip.
They will do feck all with it on maintenance and upgrade cos they have no mandate from the local tax payers to spend money at a time when we cannot even get a few pot holes filled on major roads etc.

Commercial tenancy agreements are much more varied. We do not know the agreement between BFC and Barnsley Council but I would anticipate the Council is only responsible for basic maintenance/ health and safety issues and would not be involved in funding any building development and major upgrades just as a commercial company leasing premises would not expect the landlord to fund developments/ machinery designed to improve profits/ success.
