Best thing I think?
Yes, I think it's the right thing to do. I liked derby's idea of Southgate staying on to assist with culture so we work hard to retain the huge difference in culture that he has made in pulling together players from competing prem teams, wo
rking through tribalism that was rife beforehand and making sure we don't revert back to what we were before. He has done an excellent job on this front and this has been a big factor in our relative success in the last 4 tournaments.
But fresh ideas definitely on the playing front, hopfully with a more attacking minded manager.
Thanks for the memories Gareth - some grim but beyond these, some great successes and joyful moments. We shouldn't take this for granted.
Great news.
England did have a lot of luck with the draws, his record against top 10 FIFA-rated teams is pretty poor, 32% win rate I think.
Too negative, cost England at euro final at Wembley. Good luck at what ever he does next.
Should have been sacked after the Italy game. The worst management of a game in history.
Good on him for doing the honorable thing. People will rightly point out we've "fallen" into every final / semi under him with easy runs and poor performances.
He deserves major credit for rebuilding some of the belief and setting up a new culture. He comes across as very genuine and I think some of the attacks on him have been unfair given how he was brought into the job.
However this does not hide the fact that he was an experiment that lucked out in his first two or so tournaments and has been found very much wanting in the last two.
Drop back and defend, soak up pressure and hope for the best. Absolutely the wrong thing to do when the weakest element of the squad is the back row.
He was about to make defensive changes prior to the second Spanish goal. Tells you everything you need to know.
Ultimately, he stuck to his lack of guns. Never took risks and in doing so it's cost him his job.
Had we had Sven or one or two of our previous managers in this or the last Euros we would have won one and maybe got this one too.
I bet Harry Maguires gutted XD
Over the years he's been in tenure, we could have had a far worse Manager than Southgate with poorer results, and we would have found it harder to probably employ a better one.
As a floating England fan, I admire his achievements as the second best England Manager ever and wish to thank him for the entertainment he provided and the achievements he can look back on.
Unfortunately the downside to his game is belief to affect change, strike and go for the kill when you're on top. Safety is his game plan and to a point it served him well. Thing is football is a demand results business and he failed to deliver the top prize, Italy when it was there for the taking and to act fast and alter our game plan against a good Spanish side when we equalised.
We have a larger playing nation of footballers to represent us than say Scotland, Ireland and Wales, who can only dream of what we have achieved under Gareth Southgate so let's be grateful for that. Wherever he goes next, I for one wish him all the best. As it stands, most of the top Premier League manager positions have been filled but you never know, Eddie Howe for England, Gareth Southgate to Newcastle?
Best for him and English football - the pressure was written all over him for years. Enjoy your family and life Gareth theyre worth more than anything football can give.
Sods law tells me another predicatble appointment beckons - please not Potter !!! Unless its Brian from Phoenix Nites
🏴
If you want a predictable appointment, look no further than Lee Carsley. Current U21 manager and won the Euros with them last year (ironically beating Spain in the final).
Can't say I'd be thrilled if he was appointed but the FA might decide they want continuity.
