Barnsley FC accounts for 2023/24

Barnsley FC accounts for 2023/24 have been submitted this week, with the following headlines featuring in the Executive Summary.


The financial statements cover the 13-month period from 1 June 2023 to 30 June 2024. The extended period ensures that the financial year end is now co-terminus with the standard players contract.

Turnover fell by 0.5m from the previous season. Contributing factors include not progressing to the play-off final, as in the previous season, and moving to an outsourced merchandise retail model.

Sponsorship and advertising have increased by 42% from 555k to 788k.

Catering and events have increased by 26% from 636k to 801k.

Average league match attendances increased by 1,117 (10%) to 12,681 (11,564 in 2022/2023).

7.7m of profit was generated from the sale of players during the season. The cash received from these transfers will be received over multiple instalments and seasons.

An operating loss of ?9.6m was incurred for the 13-month period, mitigated by player trading to give a net loss for the financial period of 2.8m.

During the financial period, 4.2m of cash was injected into the Club by the shareholders as equity not as a loan or debt.

CEO Jon Flatman said, "Despite making a 7.7m profit on player sales during this period, ownership injected 4.2m cash into the Club, which is not a sustainable model. A loss of 2.8m is not uncommon across the EFL and demonstrates the need for the Football Governance Bill to be resolved as soon as possible. Losses for 2024/25 are projected as being in excess of 6m and there have been, to date, cash injections of over 5m from ownership. Commercial revenues have continued to grow in the 2024/25 season and we expect that these will also see those numbers continue to increase. We are working on ensuring the business is more efficient and generates additional revenues with the ultimate aim of improving on-pitch performance. Not great by any means , they need to get their act together and cut some costs , I suggest they could save the club a fortune if they stopped sacking the manager and his coaching staff every season , it might not clear the deficit but it would certainly help .

Shads - yer talking peanuts in the scheme of things.
Probably a few hundred grand.
So give us a clue what else you would cut to reduce the outgoings by MILLIONS.

Why the smart remark about other peoples opinion ? Everyone has right to their own opinion and it does not require smart remarks . I am not a business man just a mere simple electrician but if I was looking to save money then I would certainly look at why we have such a big squad , I would also look at the number of coaches we have , we have people in suits , are they all earning their corn ? I would certainly look at the way we recruit , do we need data analysts ? not in my opinion and as I said we need to seriously look at the hire and fire of a HC and all his entourage every season, there cannot be many clubs who do it more than us, you say it is just a few hundred grand as if it doesn"t count , well it is a lot of money and to a club that is losing money then every penny counts , but to me it is the players and coaches wages which are the biggest drain on the club finances , a first team squad of 20 plus academy lads should be enough , axe the reserve team and its coaches ( under 21"s ) which will not only cut the wage bill but will also save on match day expenses such as travel and hotels etc etc but one thing for sure we cannot carry on with the same business model we have at the moment , we have to change tact or things will get worse .

I would like to thank Nudge for allowing us to join in on the forum. I would cut the costs of the stewards being bussed in from London and the South East. Surely this can be scourced locally. Half the ?searches? at turnstiles could be performed better by a six year old. Waste of money.

In other words.
Tinkering to save a few quid.
It?s just fantasy land.
If the board could save millions without weakening the club don?t you think they would do?
But they dont because they want the best possible chance of being successful.
And us fans should be thankful for that.
But are we?

Bad decision making has been the cause of our losses. I suggest that the ownership look back on these decisions, make better decisions and learn how they could run the club in a more prudent way. Why is it that their many predecessors over the years could manage it without putting the clubs very existence in jeopardy, yet show a reasonable amount of ambition at the same time and keep us in the second tier of English football?

11.2m on wages to be half way down League One .

That's your starting point to reduce costs .

That?s very true - it is insanity.
But surety I don?t need to spell it out the reason behind it.
It?s not the fault of the club that they are paying this level of wages - it?s the nature of the football league.
The whole business of English professional football is totally unsustainable and unacceptable.
But thats the position the club finds itself in.
Makes you wonder how other clubs in the league are managing to survive.

One thing?s for sure - if we cut wages we drastically reduce the chances of getting promoted.

The chances of promotion under these owners under their present model has gone, we are in decline . I see you have done your usual trick of avoiding questions when you are backed in a corner , so I will ask you again , why the smart remarks about other peoples opinion ? plus what do you think of my other ideas for reducing costs ?, a question you asked me and a question I had the courtesy to reply to , getting rid of the under 21"s , reduce the number of executives , reducing the number of coaches on the books, stop firing the Hc" on an annual basis etc etc , I await your response .
