I appreciate your honesty in such a delicate matter. It’s also important that you don’t 100% know that it isn’t a chippy in the city itself. When I myself went into Mike’s chippy years ago I definitely heard people say “chippy” but not once ever did I hear anyone mutter “chipper”. I am positive the guy making the suppers called it a chippy himself in a conversation. Surely these people are the experts. Case closed.

Case re-opened. Perhaps you were hearing what you expected to hear and normally heard? Not uncommon. 100% chipper round these here parts.

As for rolls. If you had a flackey piece then you made your roll wrong or bought the wrong thing.

Not a chance in hell it was called a chippy in the Torry (the original) branch of Mike's.

The first time I saw that particular phonetic was decades ago when Malky the cartoonist had a Big Yin strip in the Hunday Liam.

The only time I’ve particularly heard it was when an FE colleague from Paisley (and a Saints’ fan rather than a gloryhunting twát) travelled to Helsinki on a “project evaluation” XD and one of the Finns asked me why he said ‘ra’ rather than use the traditional pronunciation of the definite article. “He’s a near-weedgie cûnt” was tempting as a response, but I desisted.
