I would say it is good fortune as it looks better and healthier, hence why so many people get tanned.
I burn like an effigy if near the sun myself.
If we are in sunnier climates us Scots usually stick out like sore thumbs being so pale.

I've been known to go bright red then peel myself.
But whether it looks better is a matter of opinion.
I tan nae bad but lack of sun in Banffshire means fan it does appear I have to apply plenty sun cream, especially on my napper due to an ever receding hair line.
I prefer having a healthy glow to Aberdeen February Peely Wally right enough.
But the hair line receded a long time ago so it's a hat when I'm outside at the spa or I'm in big trouble.
I'm a traditional Scottish white skin tinged blue Although my arms tan up every year , the rest of my body ( especially noticeable on my pure white keggies in shorts !!). They never tan !!!
The first Rijecja trip a bunch of us went to a local beach bar. Ach , i'l just go for a wee dip in the Sea methinks. AFF wi me tap , and gingerly pick my way thru the well tanned locals. On the way down the beach went silent as they all stared at my pure whiteness.......... They were all waiting for me to get another look !!! When I got back to the bar two old local blokes ( you know the sort. Tanned dark grey hairy chests, medallion , flip flops ). Said to me " Here is not like Aberdeen , yes ?".
Aye pal , I'd die in the water at home. Then a big white bear would eat me.
Only time I've felt faintly self conscious of ma ***y boady.........
Many years ago I went to Portugal.
Hotel room had laid on a bottle of fizz.
Of course I drank it all and fell asleep on the balcony with metal bars.
Woke up with a stripey red and white face.
Was only there for the weekend.
Bästard!
You should have told folk it was the change strip.
I mean, how many Portuguese would even know?
