I remember the Russians going in ( circa 1980) the consensus of opinion was that they were off their heads.
An opinion that was clearly correct.
Then the Yanks had to see if they could pile in, the English of course had to join in, their only chance of empire being to be the ****ey little mate of the big bully.

If you’re my age and an Afghani, they you have spent your entire adult life putting up with an invading army in your home.

In the window of the Malacca Bar (latterly The Station Bar) on Keptie Street Arbroath, there appeared a warning sign from the locals to the military hard men of the Condor commando camp who used to swagger around town when not abroad on duty:

The Afghanis should put similar signs on every road and mountain pass in and out of their territory. It would save further centuries of eternal unwinnable conflict.
The thing is though: whose country is it?
The people who want live quietly going about their everyday lives or those who wish to subjugate the population to their medieval beliefs taken from a story someone wrote a few centuries back?
I take your point entirely about telling foreign powers to keep their armies out of it but what are normal Afghans to do?
