I've always thought that the biggest problem with politics and politicians is they are always thinking about how they win the next election/retain their seat therefore they do/say popular things (including lying) that is best for them and their next election hopes rather than what is best for the country. One example - how long have we shied away from fixing social care for elderly because all politicians are too scared to tackle it and look now at the knock on impact on the NHS via bed blocking.
So my fix is one-term only for politicians so they do what is right rather than what is popular. The continuity of knowledge/experience then comes from officials. This also has the advantage of doing away with career politicians who have little or no knowledge of how the real world works. All politicians will then likely have had a real job before they become politicians for their five/six year stint.

There has been a huge brain drain from the public sector across the past few decades. That really needs fixing for the UK as a whole and especially in the devolved nations.
