Facts about the CPS
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is the principal prosecuting authority for England and Wales.
Established as an independent body in 1986 to prosecute criminal cases, we work closely with the police and other investigators to advise on lines of inquiry and decide on appropriate charges or other outcomes, in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors. CPS prosecutors prepare cases for court and present cases in both the magistrates' courts and the higher courts.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is the head of the CPS and operates independently, under the superintendence of the Attorney General. As a government minister, the Attorney is accountable to Parliament for the work of the CPS.
The CPS consists of: 14 geographical Areas across England and Wales; three Casework Divisions; our CPS Direct service, our CPS Proceeds of Crime and a Headquarters.
A Chief Crown Prosecutor (CCP) leads each Area and is responsible for the provision of a high quality prosecution service. Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutors (DCCP) and Area Business Managers (ABM) assist the CCPs.
The three specialist casework divisions are: the Specialist Fraud Division (which also incorporates Welfare Rural & Health), the Special Crime & Counter Terrorism Division and the International Justice and Organised Crime Division. They deal with challenging cases that require specialist experience, including the prosecution of cases investigated by:

UK Border Agency
Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs
Department for Work and Pensions
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
Department of Health and
Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency
We are committed to delivering a high quality prosecution service, as expressed in our casework quality standards – while responding to the needs of the victims and witnesses of crime; being open and answerable to the wider public we serve; and offering excellent value for money.
In March 2016 we employed a workforce of approximately 5,461 staff (full time equivalent), comprising 2,131 frontline prosecutors (of whom 302 are Crown Advocates) and 2,970 legal caseworkers and support staff (of whom 197 are Associate Prosecutors). Over 93% of our people work at delivering our frontline prosecution service.
Don't fall for this one oldcolner. The CPS are puppets of the Attorney General who is appointed by the Government of the day.

You're right BT, the CPS is no more independent than you are, it bends to whichever way the latest PC wind is blowing, which is why they've taken it upon themselves to pander to the latest PC fad, and instigate a crackdown on 'social media hate crime'. This is not the decision of an independent body, it's a blatantly politically driven decision.
Have a look at previous CPS directors, Barbara Mills, member of the Labour Party, David Calvert-Smith, appointed by the CRE to head it's inquiry into racism in the police, tells you all you need to know about his political inclination, Ken MacDonald, now a Lib Dem life peer in the House of Lords, Keir Starmer, a member of Labour's Shadow Cabinet. One PC driven left-wing patsy after another, independent my arse.
