Fword had an identical Shipstones ad above their scoreboard, here's a nice clear head on image of it.....

Remember the old one in the corner. Halftime came and everyone turning to see the hatch open and the scores being put out. (Have it my mind it was more in the corner towards where the JS in now).
Yes, it was on the County Road side of the fence separating that stand from the Meadow Lane end. Look like that corner scoreboard went from A-V whilst the Kop scoreboard was A-W, so anybody with a collection of programmes from the mid-late 1960s should be able to pinpoint the date of the change.
Just been looking through some images on the laptop. The Shipstones ad was gone by April 1981 but I can't make out what was in its place, just looks black with white blocks at either end. By November 1982 (my first match) there was an ad for some business called 'Vanguard' on a light background. John Player was in place by 1986/87.
The scoreboard dates from the summer of 1963. The following appears in the programme notes for a game v Coventry on 29 August 1963 ....
“... we have a magnificent new scoreboard situated on Spion Koop to replace the existing one on Meadow Lane which is no longer fit for use. This new scoreboard has been very kindly donated by James Shipstone &Sons Ltd, to whom we are most grateful.”
Great to have a date for this at long last, many thanks. I'd always assumed it had gone up after Dunnett arrived because of the financial restraints, but turns out it was paid for by somebody else.
'Vanguard', who sponsored the scoreboard during the top flight stint in the early-mid 1980s, was another cigarette brand, there's a clear colour image of that ad board on a squad photo for 1983/84.
So we can now say that the Kop scoreboard lasted for 29 years. That's longer than any of the electronic variations but probably not as long as the Meadow Lane corner scoreboard, which doesn't appear to be in place when the ground first opened - I'd guess the original might have been introduced as the club won promotion to the top flight in the 1920's.
