Agreed. There's a world of difference between playing 4-3-3 in the Premier League, where teams have highly mobile, skilful and intelligent players, and playing it in League Two, where frankly we don't (or not many anyway). The key to Kevin Nolan's success has been simplicity and using a system players at this level can all understand. We've been quite physical and direct, but it makes for good, blood and thunder entertainment and it has been working.
Kevin Nolan done incredibly well overall. Hopefully, today was just a tactical aberration. Chuck it in the bin, go back to what's been working, and move on. Everyone makes mistakes, it's how you learn from them that determines your success.
Interesting that he says
"This is a team in transition with different types of players coming in who are finding their feet in the team,"
Confirms what we know and it has to be done, but it is unusual for a 2nd place team in late Jan to be 'in transition'. Exciting times!
To be fair, I don't know many managers who publicly admit when they've made a huge tactical error, but that's okay as long as he privately recognises it and reverts to his usual system on Tuesday. Anyone can make an isolated error. If he tries the same thing again, then I'll start to worry!
Stallard and Slater described today's formation as a 4-2-3-1. Was that how we started out and then it collapsed into a 4-5-1 or was it one way when in possession and the other when the ball was lost?
Though Noor had a good game but he does tend to overplay the ball. Mind, everyone knows Noor makes a meal of it.
The intention may well have been 4-2-3-1, but in practice it was 4-5-1 with Stead repeatedly isolated. Even when we got down the wings and played balls into the box, we just didn't have enough players of the right type to get on the end of them. Indeed, Stead frequently had to leave his central position to get the ball and connect play, so even he wasn't in the box when some of the crosses went in.
Suffice to say, anyone who has watched a decent number of Notts County home games over the past decade or so, and especially during the Keith Curle days, will have recognised the problem for the first 60 minutes today. Too much time overplaying the ball in harmless areas and a lack of numbers and natural finishing instincts in the box. It was a stark contrast from the physical, powerful, direct and effective style which has brought us such success throughout 2017. A strangely unsatisfying and frustrating day!
