"Speculation" carries connotations of imprudence but in truth all business requires investment on the basis of a hope of improved future returns. There is never certainty. All professional football requires investment, not least in players. The question here at issue is not whether to invest as this is essential but rather what level of investment is prudent. As Brin and others have pointed out in the past relegation has a cost to the club which is certain and measurable and a further cost (lower attendances) which is not certain but possible. The point at issue is whether or not the investment in strengthening the squad might have avoided some or all of those costs. It's uncertain but it is certainly worthy of consideration that Stewart's penny-pinching is in fact far from prudent and completely at odds with a sensible business approach to risk and reward.
