So very true alto, a time when footballers were real footballers and got on with the game no matter what. It's really quite pathetic these days and, in spite of the supposed superiority of modern players, we don't see anywhere near the amount of goals that we used to.
Interesting name on the reserve team sheet, at right-back was Pickup, I think he was called Michael Pickup, I can remember seeing him a couple of times, he had blonde hair. Although I've never met him, or had any contact with him, I remember my mum telling me that I was distantly related to him, she was his mum's half-cousin or something. No idea what the relationship is then, but I can say I'm related to someone who once played for Burnley reserves. That's my claim to fame. B)
At 3.12. No wonder that we never showed the best in Football ! Malcolm Alison of West Ham a coach? An example of how to tackle? No way ! Go back to square one, and collect your get out of jail card while your there .You will need it !
Balan --the big difference is that players knew how to tackle and were also allowed to do so in thsoe days without fear of being reckless, endangering an opponent, using excessive force etc., etc.
I loved playing in those days when you took the knocks as well as dishing them out.
Perhaps modern day footballers and referees should be made to watch video's of the Leeds United matches when they played under Don Revie.
If the modern day style of playing had been applied in that era Leeds United would never have finished a game with 11 men on the field.
In the 50's, football grounds were so bad in winter I remember one day I asked the sports teacher, if we were going to swim ,or play football today ?
