A marvellous player, a genius on a football pitch, and a very funny man off it, he was hilarious as the entertaining half of Saint and Greavsie. I have this memory of him flicking the ball over Jimmy Adamson's head in the penalty area at the Cricket Field End and smacking it into our net on the volley as it came down. Sadly there was no TV there to capture it for posterity, so much of the magic of players like Jimmy Greaves and our Jimmy Mac lost for ever.

One thing does surprise me is to see Jimmy described as a centre-forward, Jonathan Wilson in the Guardian, who admits he never saw him play, claims he was a centre-forward in his headline, "Jimmy Greaves redefined perception of what a centre-forward should be". Jimmy never was a centre-forward, he played off centre-forwards like Bobby Smith and Alan Gilzean at Spurs, centre-forwards wore the No 9 shirt, I've never seen any footage or photos of Jimmy wearing anything but an 8 or 10 shirt. Certainly he was what is today called a striker, but even back in the day I don't recall him being described as a centre-forward.

I remember my grandad saying McIlroy and Greaves in the same team would be almost unplayable - he was probably right. :D

When people talk about players worth millions, how much would he be worth today! He broke my heart when he scored against us at Wembley, but what a goal scorer! Allan Mullery said that people kicked lumps out of him. Tommy Smith gave him a copy of the evening menu at Liverpool Royal Infirmary before one match at Anfield.

He took the knocks, got up and got on with scoring.

Would that more were like him today!

I have nothing but admiration for him.
