Giles was a great player, great manager and a great man.

Coming from Leeds area and watching Leeds a lot with my dad in the 70’s I got to see that great side a lot.

My dad used to take me to the Albion matches and when Giles took over he told me that we’d definitely get promoted.

I wasn’t so sure when we were bottom at the end of September but dad told me to be patient and that he could see we were getting better.

I remember us finally winning, I was at the Plymouth Argyle match when Ally Brown scored with a far post header and we won 1-0, that was the turning point, I think there were only around 11,000 in attendance that day.

Marvellous player was Giles, never broke sweat, could read a game like a psychic and could pass like an angel.

My dad said that only Bobby Collins was better than Giles.

My old man really had an eye for a player, he was a Willie Johnston fan like me! 😎

Glad I was around to see it but sad that not enough of it is on tape to be able to enjoy.

Worse for Des, not being able to watch Jessie Pennington on video!

One story that I’ve been told was how one of his players who was making his debut in a cup game came to him and asked if he could get some free tickets for his family as it was a big day.

Cloughie replied that if his own mom and dad could not be bothered to pay to see their son why on earth did he expected the fans to pay to watch him.

Story about Giles who was the ultimate professional …

I used to know a Referee who once took charge of a charity game, and Giles was playing. This was just before he retired.
During the game one of the amateurs was a little late on Giles, not intentional but never the less clattered him. Easy done when you’re out of your depth against such a majestic player.

After a while as the game progressed the ref told me that as he glanced round he saw the young amateur in a heap on the ground and Giles a few yards away.

Yes a true professional who never wanted to loose.
All the Leeds players including Giles knew the dark arts

This is so true of pro's.

A friend of mine used to play in the East Midlands Regional League in the early 90's, he was a very decent centre half.

In one game he was a bit late into a challenge and caught the opposing player who was early 40's and very overweight, he didn't think much about it.

A few minutes later he was hit with the hardest challenge he'd ever known, late, well over the ball and an absolute crippler.

As he lay writhing in agony the player leant over him and introduced himself........"Hi, I'm Kenny Burns, you might be too young to remember me.....you'll f u c k in g remember me now you wee c u n t" .......said old Kenny.

Ex European Cup Winners are winners for a reason.


Another guy I knew was ex Stoke City winger and England under 23 Ian Painter, a big Albion fan who had a sports shop in Wombourne.

First game of the season for Stoke was against Barnsley.

Anyway, a few minutes into the game and young Painter is giving the ageing centre half a torrid time, including a humiliating nut meg, Painter was a real cheeky chappie on and off the pitch, Jack the lad!


Shortly afterwards a cross was played in towards the near post and he darted across the centre half to try and get his toe on it at which point he told me he was hit with a force he'd never felt before or since, it was late, hard and just below his knee but his whole body was launched through the air and off the pitch such was the force.

As the centre half extracted himself from the tangle of bodies Ian was left gasping for air, he was totally winded.

He saw this player look across to check where the ref was looking and as the ref looked towards the bench to signal the trainer to come on the centre half walked over Ian and stamped on his hand for good measure.

He then turned to him and said......"That'll teach you to show me some respect in future and not try to make me look like a c u n t you wee w a n k er".

Yep.......it was Kenny Burns yet again a few years earlier in 1985!

My mate would tell me about playing against Derek Kevan (Ansells?). Kevan played in midfield stroking the ball around. Not bad for somebody who was a big brick ****house of a centre forward in his playing days. As a kid I was devastated when he left us.

An old story I’ve told before.

My dad played for his school in Harrogate and Kevan was at school in Ripon which is only about 5 miles away.

They played against each other in a district trial when they were about 14, my dad was a very good centre forward at that age as was Derek.

It was a very even game but my dad’s side lost 7-0!

Derek scored all 7 goals and my dad reckoned he was the only difference between the sides in terms of ability.

He said Derek was a “man” at 14 and a physical mountain compared to every other player.

Dad said he was the standout player by an absolute mile in Yorkshire in his age group.

My old man was wanted by Huddersfield Town who were in the top division at the time but my nan wouldn’t let him sign as a schoolboy as he’d won a scholarship to the most prestigious private school in the area at that time.

I think he forgave her on her death bed!🤣

An absolute legend. I was lucky to meet him at a book signing at the old Waterstones on new St.

Read may books about him and at the end of his career he was a shadow of his old self an he liked a bung and the rumour is he was told to resign or the fa were going to charge him for the bungs.

One of the funniest stories about him was in the book Pitch Black and told by Viv Anderson who said how he encouraged him when he was being pelted by fruit whilst warming up and cloughie basically said it's because they know you're a threat to them, so now get back out there and get me an apple and a banana.

I'm fine Al, at least until the next defeat that is. Hope you are doing well too and your recent medical issues are behind you. That was a great debut indeed, really liked his touch and confidence.

We all want Tulloch to get given a chance mate, I think he is still injured, as prior to his injury he was on the bench.

Boro will be the same as Hull as they have lost 2 in a row and will use the Colin Dark arts to avoid defeat.
