I'm quite lucky in this regard too as although we are only 9 miles from nearest town and 24 from larger city there is very little pollution and the starfield of our night sky is brilliant. Obviously living in a rural coastal area helps. My neighbour has an app on his phone that helps identify and track various stars a bit like Google earth and with mostly clear skies like this I do get tempted to get into a bit of astronomy like him. Doubtless the night sky here is nowhere near as clear as the places you mention but still impressive to me.
Despite the small size of the village there has also been a movement by some to limit night light pollution further by restricting use of security light sensors and replacing what street lighting there is with those that just illuminate the pavements/roads below.
