We even had one in our school BT who became our modern languages teacher. We called him turtle because he tortoise.

You are correct, Outwood, they were called that because the sea was full of turtles.
Sadly they were over hunted/ fished and there has been a turtle farm on Grand Cayman for years. They work on protecting the species and release turtles into the wild. They protect the eggs and the nest from predators.
