I recently read a book about the five Emperors claiming descent from Julius Caesar - which includes Claudius. They had their moments, sinkov. Nero infamously enjoyed using Christians as human torches.

However, they were an advanced civilisation. I studied Roman Law as part of my degree. One could see the development of society through the laws that were passed.

As a warning to our society, perhaps too late, is the decline of the Roman Empire as decadence and corruption grew. We would, perhaps, be doing our children and grandchildren well if ancient history came back into the syllabus. As Confucius said “if you want to know the future, look at the past”.

I greatly respect freedom of choice.

On our last foray to the North East we called into Vindolanda, It was amazing that 2000 years ago the Romans brought such civilization yet still brutally subjugated the indigenous Brits. Forced labour, slavery and human rights violations just don't cut it with me but hey ho, each to their own. :s

We'll be making a start on E1 sometime today or tonight Chas, looking forward to it.

On a similar topic we recently started watching a re-run of Bronowskl's The Ascent of Man, I can remember thinking it was awesome when I first saw it many years ago. This time I gave up after three epsodes, it just couldn't hold my interest. I'm hoping to have another go at Kenneth Clark's Civilisation soon, I was enthralled by that first time round, but it was a long time ago, will that have stood the test of time.

Not much has changed, sinkov, in my opinion.

The Romans were more open to the baser instincts of human beings. The blood lust of the Colosseum, for me, is not much different to watching boxing and its variants nowadays.

The rise of ****ography in today’s society is very little different from the interest that the Romans had.

We try to hide the “vices” of mankind. The Romans were very open to reality in that sense.

As ever mon ami, it is not possible to distinguish between your fishing expeditions and your sincerely held views. They tend to be equally bizarre and your ability to boggle my mind has no limits.
