I think that it stems from the time that SKY were offering a new deal paying £250k to the home club for each match televised live. The SPL Chief Executive Roger Mitchell (I think that was his name) decided that they would make more money setting up their pay per view channel for Scottish Premier League games which proved to be a disaster with insufficient subscribers.
The SPL Chief Executive had to go back to SKY cap in hand asking for their previous deal which was now off the table.
In the end the ‘new’ SKY deal paid £77k to the home club for each match televised live which was less than a third of the original deal.
Now the TV money is put in a pot and distributed via the position a club finishes the season in their respective league
