Some feedback on how he's doing:
Jamal Lewis has made six appearances so far for Sao Paulo, starting three times, with one assist to his name since joining from Newcastle United. He did set up the winner in Sao Paulo’s recent 2-1 win over Athletico Paranaense - but it's a mixed bag so far according to jounslist Filipe Guedes, who has spoken to the Geordie Boot Boys about Lewis in Brazil:
"It has been a hard start to his journey. He has had three chances in the starting XI, drawing one, losing one then winning one.
After his last game as a starter, a 3-0 victory against Bahia, he was benched. The coach chose to use a centre-back at left-back instead. But, in this game, he was subbed on and provided the winning assist. After this our supporters showed more patience and he may have more chances.
Most of the criticism about him are about his construction skills. He’s always trying the easier pass, usually to our centre-backs or defensive midfielders. It seems like a natural lack of confidence.
He’s struggling on the defence as well. Here in Brazil we have many skilful wingers and he needs to adapt."
Looks like he needs to up his performances to get a full time contract out in Brazil after his current loan deal ends.
Football now is as much about a state of mind as it is skill and athleticism.
I can't find it but I remember reading a very good piece on him in, I think, the Independent, which detailed his skillset and identified all his strengths. The piece was very optimistic about him being a big future star.
Shame as it looks like that potential might not be realised.
