I like that.
We need a solution for their left back, he was great when we played them at their place and had JJ locked up all night on Friday. Perhaps Jarvis could unlock that side of the pitch. May be tempted to play Abbott where you?ve put Whitaker and gamble on Robbie to play alongside Palmer.
I dont think we can change shape at this point, but we need a different approach for this and Jatta out gives us a chance to do it. Theyre strong in the air and physical but we created chances with sharp passing in the ground - we need to get Jones and Jarvis high up the pitch and on the ball around the edge of the box as much as possible.
I think I would play:
Bass
Macari Platt Bedeau
Gordon Palmer Abbott Austin
Jones Jarvis
McGoldrick
If Didzy is out then just swap Traore in. Crossing the ball isnt going to work at these, quick passing and dribbling might. Austin at wing back isnt ideal but not sure theres any other way of doing it.
Then theres the option of going even more attacking for the last 20 or whatever if we still need a goal by putting Jones and Jarvis wide and sticking Grant, Whitaker and Traore on.
I don't think we need to go 'Gung Ho'.
Firstly we have to stay in the game.
It's no good losing a goal to kamikaze tactics.
If Jatta and Didzy were both out, I would go with Traore in Jattas position and Abbot ina creative Didzy roll.
Bring in Robertson/ Hinchy as protection for the back 3.
Jarvis on the left, and hit there defence with pace.
Bass
Macari. Platt. Bedeaux
Robertson. Palmer
Jones. Jarvis
Abbott. Grant
Traore
With Jatta out we will be much more vulnerable at the back from set pieces.
So I could see a case for a back 4 including McDonald.
The idea of playing Abbott further forward is appealing with Jack Hinchy alongside Palmer.
Our bench has often been weak this season and I can?t envisage what this one is going to look like. Are we likely to have any game changers on it?
I've never seen Traore do anything. It would be hero-making for him if he scored the winner.
Just to avoid any personal disappointment I declare now that we are too lightweight from the midfield forward (Abbott is a worker but still gets bounced off a lot of times) and will lose the second leg by two goals.
Didzy can put a shoulder in but has he got the reserves to go a full on 90? MT is not an attacking L2 forward (and never will be IMO). Can I see us scoring at least two and not conceding? No.
Do I hope we can pull something out of the hat? Absolutely, it gives us something to talk about before the final instead of sinking into a close season blue funk at the opportunities allowed to slip by this season.
