Just how many youngsters do we have on this site? I was just too young to have been able to have visited the Twisted Wheel in Manchester. Did do all nighters at the Casino, Torch, Va Va's, Catacombs, Samantha's and more. The most lavish one was at the Blue Orchid in Draycott in the Clay. The venue was a 4 star restaurant with a wonderful sprung wooden floor that was perfect for dancing on. The restaurant itsself would shut at around 11. Clear away the tables and hey presto, great place for a nighter. It lasted 18 months and then the venue was acquired by new owners who didn't think being associated with Northern Soul Nighters was good for business.
I was born in 1954 and started dancing to Soul music way back in 1964. I can still do a backdrop.............. downside is that, due to 2 arthritic knees, I can't get back up anymore :)

Just been listening to AC/DC Thunderstruck live at the River Plate. I know one of the best performances ever was Queen at (Live Aid) Wembley but this to me beat it, just watch that legend Angus Young on that guitar absolute genius, if you don't enjoy this you're dead!

I don't think you mean Draycott in the clay, you mean Draycott between Borrowash and Breaston, The Blue Orchid Was the club inside The Tudor Court (now demolished and a housing development) on Gypsy Lane, and very much like The Travellers Rest at Griffydam and The Boat club at Shipley, nightclubs that were far enough out of the way for 'all sorts' to be gotten up to. The Blue Orchid predates my (non-dancing) immersion in the Northern soul 'scene', but there was still a Northern/Motown disco happening there (I thought on a mondays, a friend I saw at the weekend remembers sundays) well into the late 70's, maybe even the 80's. A long-standing resident of Draycott (the other end of Gypsy Lane to me) always refers to Gypsy Lane as Condom Alley from those days, apparently the lane was venue of choice for fuelled up revellers wanting some loving 'afters'Quote:

On a different note, I have seen a post on FB today saying that Petula Clark's Downtown and Couldn't live without your love are being played at Northern gigs in the Manchester area and elsewhere. A lot of comments were that they are too "poppy" for a soul night. I replied that they are no more poppy than The Sweet Three, I would if I could or The Present, Many's the slip twixt the cup and the lip. Two songs that were big on the scene way, way back.
