I think that them going to SWFC has taken the heat off TS.
I think smith will do ok at Wednesday. Some people are bitter that he’s signed for Wednesday, doesn’t bother me one bit . What bothered me was how it panned out . Our manager will still be having the knifes removed from his back . I’ve said this before if Rotherham can offer a really good deal for smith to stay, why didn’t they do that a lot earlier instead of the last minute. This fiasco with smith and his mate is partly due to the club not negotiating with players earlier on in their contracts.
To me TS got himself cornered saying he'd give Smith the contract to keep him here but with his business head on he'd know a player his age could only give a 2 year contract to. Also there's better players at this club than Smith Vickers Barlaser Wiles Chioe for starters they'd want at least wages Smith had got if he had stopped here.
It was a 3 year deal that we offered knowing that others would have. We have no better centre forward at the club and it's that position that commands the highest wages.
Smith wouldn't have been the hiest earner in regards wages even if he had signed the contract.
It was desperation for success from SWFC that forced them to offer wages that people on the minimum wage will look at and think, how does he earn in a week what I earn in a year?
It's not how it works. If Rotherham had found themselves stuck in League 1 next season how would they have funded these wages? Players who are 30 years old and in demand, are going to run contracts down and sign a contract with the highest bidder. Rotherham will have known this from the outset and made the decision to keep them for a promotion push. Why would they sign a new deal in the last year of their contract? If they do that the club would want a fee if they move on. That reduces the amount morally bankrupt clubs like Wednesday will pay in wages.
The only thing I would question, is why drop down a league but you only have to look at the Barry Bannan situation to see it's the way of the world.
Take Smith and these other 'free signings'. He now has a bumper contract for 3 years. If he doesn't perform he knows he'll get a good part of his contract paid up. That'll leave him to go and ply his trade somewhere else and not be out of pocket. Be that in 9 months to 18 months time.
Rotherham have done the best they can and their reward for keeping them is a few million more in revenue next season. We might be 20 points adrift next season. Who knows. What I do think is that we need a different approach and need to try something different.
Rotherham. I can't blame them. The players, I can't blame them either.
The authorities. They need to sort the game out. I've no issue with clubs spending big if their business model allows that. What we don't to see is a raft of points deductions and FFP breaches at the end of next season. It's going to happen again and too many clubs will avoid anything and cheat again.
The jokers at S6 being one of the worst offenders. Shame for them, that they have the biggest simpleton in the football league managing them. Haha.
