The drug, colchicine, dates back thousands of years to ancient Egypt, where it was known for its special healing properties. It is one of a few medicines that survived until modern times. Most recently, it has been used to treat and prevent inflammation caused by gout that can lead to painful arthritis and Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF), which is common among Jewish people of North African descent.
So far, four controlled studies of around 6,000 coronavirus patients have been published on the effect of colchicine, Schattner said, each showing a “significant improvement in severe coronavirus indices and, most importantly, there was a decrease in mortality by about 50% compared to those who were not treated with colchicine.”
Some 50 years ago, using the drug to treat FMF was verified by researchers at Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer and Hadassah, not only against the sharp attacks associated with the disease and their prevention, but also in protection against a serious complication of FMF – amyloidosis, which affects the kidneys.
More recently, several studies have started to prove its effectiveness in the treatment of acute pericarditis (swelling around the heart, and in the prevention of post-cardiac injury syndrome and atrial fibrillation following cardiac surgery.
“As is well known, patients who have had a heart attack are at a significantly increased risk of recurrence and stroke, and these are very many patients,” Schattner said. “Studies from recent years have found that thanks to its anti-inflammatory activity on the atherosclerotic layers in the arteries, colchicine in small daily doses is able to effectively protect these patients...........

"Old Bob" is being kicked out of hospital on the 20th because NHS chiefs say beds must be freed up. He will be on his tenth day of infection with Omicron on that day and medically fit or not for discharge, we have to sort out his discharge arrangements and reveal to where he will be going.

There are currently just over 6,000 patients in hospital in England who have tested positive for Covid, the best estimate is that 25% of them are in with other problems, nothing to do with Covid, and 10% are older patients ready for discharge, but they have nowhere to send them, care homes are struggling to accommodate them because they're short-staffed, as the Government has forced them to sack all un-vaxxed care workers.Quote:

There was a glimpse into the real world yesterday BT, after the Press Briefing. The invited journos were all masked and socially distanced, including Robert Peston, who is continually berating Boris and the Tories for not following their own rules, one law for them, no law for us etc. The meeting finished, Boris and his muppets departed off the platform and disappeared out of sight. Normally it would have been straight back to studio, but for some reason they stayed live on a camera at the back of the room, and in the bottom left corner of the screen you could see Peston, thinking he was no longer live on TV, ripping off his mask. One law for us and one for them eh, Peston clearly thinks he's one of them, not to be bothered with the petty regulations we are obliged to obey. It's as irritating as having to listen to Sky's Beth Rigby moaning about the Tories, the same Beth Rigby who was suspended from Sky earlier this year, because she like Peston and some Tory spads, found it convenient to ignore the rules when it suited her to.Quote:
